Hi! Just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Jennifer and a cute little flamepoint siamese showed up at my house a month ago in desperate health conditions. He had 3 broken teeth, inverted eyelids requiring surgery, and neuter surgery done, then later ends up with diabetes with numbers in the 400s. He has been started on Lantus and after a few dosage adjustments is doing much better and i have it down to 199 at last check. I do have challenge with his ears and getting his blood tested as he was ear tipped at original neuter and half his ear is gone and the other one also has a big chunk out of it too. I also have some trust issues with him and find myself a bit scared of him at times due to not knowing any of his history and he can be very testy with my dog. I appreciate any advice and help from the board as i know you all have so much more experience than i do!!!

First off Thank You so much for taking this little guy in and getting him all the help he needed.

Okay now for the questions and to hopefully answer a few of your questions.

Okay it sounds like you are home testing...right? If so congrats..now for getting blood out of his ear, you can use any spot along the edge of the earit doesn't have to be right on the tip, in fact I found on my big male it was actually easier to get him to bleed low on the ear right above that little double flap of skin. Second if he is aggressive or just squirmy you can turn him into a giant kitty burrito by wrapping him up in a big fluffy towel or blanket so only is head is exposed. But if it is just his unknown history don't let that worry you at all. I adopted both of my diabetics as diabetics and only roughly know their history as well. And I started testing them within hours of meeting both of them. If you approach it with confidence he will pick up on that but if you are nervous and scared he will pick up on that too. How is he with you at other times, is he fiesty or lovable? The other key is treats before and after each test, you want him to think of it as something pleasurable. Find a treat that he really loves and only gets when it is time to get tested.

Now for the questions...what dose of Lantus is he on, and how often do you give it?
What is his current diet like?

Things to help with testing:
- always give a low carb treat afterwards, even if unsuccessful
- a dab of Neosporin ointment with pain relief may be applied a few minutes before testing, then wiped off. It reduces the annoyance, helps the blood bead up, and helps the puncture heal

Thanks for all the tips!!! Im curious what a low carb treat would be. I am feeding him fancy feast classic style only 3-4 times per day and then he gets EVO in small amounts when he is hungry between meals. He is on Lantus 3 units 2x/day. I am home testing him but he is super squirmy so its hard to get him to bleed. I will try the burrito method. He isnt agressive persay but he is fussy and not sure what he capable of. He gets very agressive with my dogs so i wouldnt put it past him to get upset with me. I will also get some neosporin and try that trick too. thanks and so nice to meet you all!!
