hi everybody! My name is Shelley and about 9 or 10 years ago my hubby found a poor little black kitty by a dumpster in Rifle, Co...he was starving and very little...like 8oz...my husband Chris brought him home and we nursed him back to health..his highest weight was 22 lbs. But lost it quickly in about 6 weeks he was at 16 lbs so we took him to the vet and his sugars were upper 500's. So here we are. He also had urinary crystals with a blockage about 8 years ago. If I knew then, what I know now, then things could be different.

I am not really freaking out as I am a nurse...but I feel so sorry for my little-big guy now. Nice to be here for some support!

Welcome to the site, and hindsight is always 20-20 but that's the past.

Glad you are here and know that you will get all the support and info you will ever need here to get your cat's BG under control.

There will be lots of questions coming at you, so I'll start.
What are you feeding and how frequently.
Are you home testing.
If you have started insulin, what type and what dose.
Are there any other health issues aside from the diabetes.

Welcome Shelly....and extra sweet Rifle,
You have arrived at the right place for sure. We can assist you with every aspect of Rifle's care.
Have you started him on insulin yet?
If so what kind and what dose?
We would like you to hometest your Rifle so are you in for that? It is not hard at all and becomes a very enjoyable ritual that nearly every single cat grows to enjoy.
Also food....very important. What are you currently feeding Rifle?

Looking forward to getting to know both of you a whole lot more.

Rifle is currently taking 2 units twice a day of prozinc and he also has a history of urinary crystals and blockage..we have not had much trouble with that as we have been feeding him urinary cat food. However, everything I have read so far regarding diabetes in cats is to STOP feeding dry food and only feed canned food. That's fine with me because he loves it! I also heard with urinary trouble in cats that it's not so much as feeding your cat a special urinary diet, but how much water ....so as long as that is true than i will not worry so much about his crystals and continue feeding him canned food which obviously has more water in it.

Right now he is getting canned Wellness twice a day and I am supplementing him during the day with dry food since I don't really want to leave canned food out all day when I am at work.

I am also checking his bs 2-3 times a day depending on my work schedule.. I work 12 hour shifts but my family helps out too with insulin and checking his bs. I have also moved his injection site from his neck to other parts of his body because I heard that there is not very good blood flow in his neck...that seems to work better as well because I was still getting readings in the 500's...now it has been in upper 200's.

shelley, as these numbers come down you will likey want to reduce your dose.
you will find it helpful to have a spread sheet so you can easily track his progress...and we can see it with you. it will be linked to your post each time you post.
let me get marjorie over here to help you put it in place ok.
sometimes folks like to walk thru it over the phone.
