This message was in the thread about different am/pm dosing and I was worried it would get lost. Apologies if I shouldn;t have done this to bring it out into the light!

From Sarshsmom:

I am brand new to this, so still overwhelmed by it all. But my cat is on Lantus, and she started her first week (last week) on one unit morning and night. After a day at the vets last Saturday for a glucose curve her numbers were still really high. So the vet had me double her dose to 2 units morning and night, which I was concerned about. Her morning dose seems to go OK, but after her evening dose, she consumes a ton of water almost as if I was raising her glucose level. I am so confused and concerned. Any ideas?

Hi! We cannot give dosing advice without any data from blood testing, but the starting dose on lantus is 1.00 unit bid.
We need to know if you are home testing? what food are you giving this cat-?? What vet has told you about FD & the treatment?
Any other health problems?? Others will be along to help, but we need more info..

Hi, This is Sarshsmom. My cat is on dry Iams trying to switch to Hills MD dry. I know dry is really bad, but I can't get her to eat can, but will keep trying. I am not home testing yet, but hope to learn next week how to do it. No other health problem. Vet has been helpful, althought they don't seem to give me much information about the importance of what kind of food. I was just curious if the immediate consumption of water indicated anything. THANKS so much for any info. It means a lot to me.

Hi Sarshamom! Welcome to LantusLand.

I'd like to make a suggestion since this is, no doubt very new and you are probably not having the best of weeks given your kitty's diagnosis. The easiest place for you to get started here at FDMB is on the Health Board. You can introduce yourself and your kitty, if you give information about your general location, there is likely to be a member who can help you with home testing, they will give you tons of info about food, and will help with getting a spreadsheet and proflle in place. We are very blood glucose numbers oriented here and if you are not yet testing, this is going to seem like even more complicated Greek!

Please do take a look at the starred notes at the top of the Board. They will help you to begin to get an understanding of Lantus and the dosing protocol we use. Once you feel like you've got at least one or two things that are making sense, post your kitty's numbers and we can further help you to get oriented and feel less overwhelmed.

welcome, Sarshsmom!

Some people here notice that their cats drink more when their glucose is dropping fast. Each cat is different, though, so there is no way to no for sure if that is happening except by testing. You've gotten some good suggestions already, keep asking questions! As Sienne pointed out, the Health forum on this board is a great place to post for basics and to learn to test.
