Newbie...Thoughts on SS

lori,
lol, you didn't link us to the SS

Just some background for anyone looking over the SS.
Kitty is "Copper", a 7 year old Maine Coon whose fighting weight is currently 17 lbs. The insulin is Prozinc. Dx'd 2 or 3 weeks ago, changed to all canned FF classics, saw a 100+ point or so drop from that food change.
Lori has also had some phone consults with Dr. Lisa recently. Original starting dose recommendation (420 bg) was 4u BID, then 2u BID from 2nd vet after food change (272 bg). Dr. P. recommended starting dose of 1u BID. I think Lori was originally at YDC before joining FDMB..... Lori, do I have all that right? All that info will help when people consider the SS.

Do you have any thoughts on why he seems tired? Are you able to check for ketones? The numbers aren't at a place where any of my cats would seem tired to me, that's why I'm asking.

Has his appetite picked up at all?

Yes, eating better and seems very hungry. He pretty much has stayed steady with numbers all day. History is correct, except Dr. P recommended 1.5u the last 2cycles. He seems more alert this afternoon. Can't get the urine check because he prefers to go outside during the day instead of cat litter. He is also a low squater for urinating so hard to catch. I think i might go to the aquarium gravel for tonights catch of urine. When he goes outside, i have been watching him so he doesn't escape. He is getting irritated with the ear pricks(poor kitty), so i am having to feed him some food before i test. I hope this is not skewing the result. He just doesn't seem to be going down at all. I know i need to be patient. I just want him to feel better sooner than later.

Thanks!
Lori

Lori,
In order to bribe him when testing, instead of "food", try a low or no carb treat. I use Beefeater freeze dried treats, and Bob loves them (available from Petsmart). They used to carry shrimp, but haven't seen that in a couple months. They come in Chicken and Salmon too. If no petsmart, there's a list of low-carb treats on the board someplace and I'll see if I can find the link....

Seeming more alert is good, but I'm wondering why he's so tired. Has he had recent bloodwork done?
Good question.... do you know if the vet has any numbers relating to "potassium" levels?

The primary care vet did NO blood work...no panel...no cbc....no UA....nothing for a MDB (minimum data base).

As you can probably understand, this fact is more than a bit frustrating and was discussed when Lori and I chatted.

The diagnosis of FD (by the primary care vet) was made only on clinical signs and 2 BG values in-house. The first vet Rx/d N and the second vet Rx'd 2 units BID of Prozinc.

Again...no blood work...no UA...no fructosamine.....

No, the local vet did not even offer a blood test. I'm in the process of finding another local vet that is more up on FD. Very frustrating in my area.

Just got my PMPS reading and was @241. However, the meter(freedom style lite) i have been using has been low balling the readings. I compared this with an alpha meter i borrowed from local vet and the alpha meter was always 100pts higher. I just bought a NEW WAL-MART RELION MICRO and the reading was 362. So he has been in the 300's all along. Probably will change over to the RELION meter now.

Lori,
On your spreadsheet, skip a line, and maybe across it write "Switched to Relion Meter" so that later, the higher numbers will make sense. I agree that it appears the other meter has been "low" all along, and you did mention that a couple days ago in another thread. The "conventional" wisdom I have read here is that the difference between the ATrack and a human meter with BG's in the higher numbers is "30 points", but if your experience is 100, that's important.

When you went to the 2nd vet, and they told you "272", that was done by them at the office, right? If so, then I wouldn't say Copper has been in the 300s all along, but definitely higher than we all thought he was.

You stayed with 1.5 tonight? You might want to change the PMPS number you recorded from 241 to 362 if those tests were taken at the same time.

Before we all freak out, how do you feel about poking your finger a couple times? Do it once with each meter and see what the readings are on each? See if your's is off significantly on the two meters.
