I was wondering if some experienced PZI users could take a look at Bama's spreadsheet and help me determine if there is anything I should change to help her go and stay OTJ.

Bama was diagnosed on 3/12 and started PZI that evening. I have been home testing from day one but I was not maintaining a spreadsheet with notes in the beginning. She was eating Purina DM dry when diagnosed and was barely eating. I immediately started to switch her over to wet food and have been feeding FF classics only for at least 2 weeks. Between weight loss and the switch to low carb wet food her numbers started to come down very quickly.

I went with my gut feeling when adjusting her insulin dose as her numbers came down. I'm not sure I used the best approach to lowering her dose but the end result seems to indicate I didn't do anything too horrible.

Current status:
Last injection was 4/13 AM
Increased energy and activity levels for the past 1.5-2 weeks
Fed 1 can FF twice per day at AMPS and PMPS, food is not finished in one sitting and is consumed throughout the day

Changes I am making now:
Mini meals - Feeding 1/2 can per meal for a total of 4 meals per day
Ordered urine glucose test strips - arriving on 4/16

Changes I am considering:
Microdosing

Any thoughts or help would be appreciated!

Hi!

I responded to your thread on Health also. (I post on both forums) I think you and Bama are doing great! I think I would set a number that I would shoot, like 170-180. And if you can monitor, decide what dose you might give at that number. As I said on Health. you can buy a few U100 needles, use the conversion chart and dose .1 or .2 . Then you 'chase" the number, not shooting again until he is in the range again, even if it is several days. It is essentially what you are doing already.

But I would not do it on a day I couldn't monitor. And I think it might be wise to choose a higher range first (like 180), dose it and see what happens before you try a lower range.

It might help if you check out some of the spreadsheets on the Remission Thread on the top of this page. You can see how people dosed as their cats were going OTJ.

Hi Liz,

Bama's ss is looking beautiful. It is very encouraging to see him drop from the 150s to 70s on his own. He does seem to rise in the am. Do you give him anything to eat overnight? That might help lower the ambg. (when cats are going OTJ, the food lowers rather than raises their bg. So small frequent meals, day and night, can be helpful.)

Bama usually sleeps in the bed with me throughout the entire night. Sometimes she gets up and wanders off but I don't think she really tries to eat anything until alarms start going off in the morning. When I have put food down before bed most if not all of the food is still there in the morning.

I will try getting up to feed her in the middle of the night to see if that will convince her to eat. I don't like how her numbers are inching up. I am going to try to get her to eat something that is lower in carbs than FF.

Could feeding a lower carb food in the evening before bed help her numbers overnight? My brain wants to say yes...

I'm not experienced with OTJ trials but I wanted to wish you good luck with everything. It looks like Bama is responding well to the decisions you have been making. Also I have also decided to feed my Jose smaller meals 4 times a day rather than the 3 times I currently do. Other members have suggested using a timed auto feeder such as the PetSafe5. That way you won't have to wake up in the middle of the night. I've read reviews and people have said once the cat associates the noise of the feeder with food they will come running whenever they hear it even at night. Maybe you could benefit from one too. :)

Feeding a low carb food at night could help numbers go down. Not sure of the science behind it but sometimes food helps bring numbers down.

Not sure what carb percent you have now but friskies special diet is lower than regular and still cheap! I feed mine turkey and giblets and beef and chicken...both 5% carbs. Not the only option but did want to let you know. Good luck!
