Truman is 8yrs old and was just diagnosed on June 5th, we started insulin and at home testing on June 6th. He is 16 pounds and is on 1 unit of lantus twice daily. We took him off dry food and he is given fancy feast classic, three cans a day to meet his 300kal intake recommended by our vet. We have absolutely loved our vet and have felt supported, but I still feel overwhelmed and confused on some things.

He always wants to eat and his numbers have never dropped too low or jumped too high. He consistently has bg levels between 160 to 250. Through reading other feeds I see people maybe considering not given insulin at certain bg levels. When do you hold off insulin? It took two blood tests to confirm he had diabetes, as he was only slightly elevated in the first test and they thought it could have just been from stress. Should we have just done the diet change before starting the insulin?

Truman thanks you in advance

Side note, tomorrow is his first at home curve test.

Welcome Truman and his beans! (humans ;))
We all know the overwhelmed feeling you are going through right now :bighug:. While his diagnosis numbers, to me, are kind of pre-diabetic stage they are still above average so his body may not be using nutrients properly so he is still hungry. What is your feeding schedule like?
Usually, we tell new members not to shoot if BG is under 200. Probably should have tried diet change to low carb wet food first but if you have been doing that since starting insulin and his numbers are still in that range, he may need a tiny bit of help.

If you wouldn't mind setting up your Signature with some information about Truman, it will be helpful as you make more posts: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/editing-your-signature-profile-and-preferences.130340/

Since it sounds like you are home testing, which is fantastic!, this is the Spreadsheet template most of us who home test use to share BG numbers/history. We can help explain any patterns he might start to show. Just need a Google account: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/fdmb-spreadsheet-instructions.130337/

And I like to give this to new members to read ahead of time but hope you never need: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/how-to-treat-hypos-they-can-kill-print-this-out.15887/

Feel free to ask any questions! We're a support group for Truman and YOU! :cat:

Thank you so much I will set up my signature and spread sheet soon.

He is currently feeding at 7:30 am, around 1 pm, and at 7:30 pm. With insulin in morning and night feedings.
