Newbie question about home glucose testing

Good,
any "junky" stuff, like with gravy or shredded, something high in carbs? The best thing you can feed is that sort of stuff, but only in small quantities. The goal is to get his numbers up just a little, but no fill up his tummy while doing it. Wet food will stay in his system longer than karo, but not as long as dry food.

You're pretty much just going to have to keep an eye on him, and test him every 30 minutes or so for the next couple of hours. But also, trust your eyes. He might not "show" any of the classic hypo symptoms, like dizzy, drunken walking. Look for him to demand more food. He instinctively knows when he needs a sugar boost, and might insist that he's hungry even though he just ate a few minutes ago. Just watch him, and for the afternoon, make him feel like he's the greatest creation ever - lots of pets and scratches and lovin'.

We just preformed another test...88 this time. Normally he gets insulin at 6:30, however tonight he won't be given any. We plan to test again in about an hour, once he finishes dinner.

If I would have listened to my vet about the amount she wanted to dose MY cat at it would have done her in. She also told me just give her the insulin and DO NOT test her.
I was not about to listen to that, even though I was new to this I knew better.
I had a very close friend of mine who has since passed away from diabetes complications(kidney failure) educate me on the need of testing many years ago. Her BG would go very high at times, very high.
Although I did not test as much as I should have, I did against my vets advice.

You got thru this very nicely...no complications.
As for shooting tonight....it may be time for you to introduce yourself over on the lantus room, under insulin support groups.
You can follow their advice as this lantus is all they do....

That's good. An hour after eating and no obvious boost from food. His pancreas could be doing it's job.

Just wanted to update: tested him at 5:30 this morning, and glucose level was 116. No insulin given. Can't wait to check later to see what it is.
 
That is exciting news. I am a newbie, and there will be others on later that can verify whether it is really good or not. My kitty was 80 this morning, so no shot for him, either.

I had a bad scare on Friday with Samson with the low numbers....in fact, at the vet, Samson read at 20, and you never saw so much scurrying around of vet and techs, rounding up stuff to get in Samson's mouth. If you thought we were freaked out on the board yesterday with your kitty, you should have seen professionals freaking out.....that really made a believer out of me. Samson wasn't showing any outward signs of distress, either. My vet told me to take him home and feed him, and then feed him some more, and if he wasn't coming around, to bring him back. So the advice you were getting here for your kitty was spot on with what I heard from my vet.

I'm very glad we both had a good outcome with our scares.

The help and support here is really amazing.

Sounds like these 2 babies are reading wonderful bg's today.... Lets keep our furry paws crossed they keep it up..... Low numbers are sooo scarey!

Very pleased with his numbers today. Also glad that he is getting used to having his ear poked. I show him the rice sock now, and he starts meowing and jumps up into the recliner to have it done. He purrs the entire time. That's not to say he doesn't fidget a bit, but still pleased with the way he has learned what needs to be done. He's such a special boy!

We can't access your spreadsheet. I think you probably need to share it. Try going back to your copy and over on the right hand side of the page, choose Share. Then Publish to the web. When the URL comes up in the box, copy it and paste it into your signature.
