Good morning. I just found this message board while searching for dry diabetic cat food for my baby girl Shadow. She was diagnosed end of August. We had one scare with an ER visit where they kept her for 4 days. Since she's been back home she's on 2 units of glargine twice a day. She has 2 brothers who are not diabetic but are on the same diet she's on. I am a member of the FB page and it's been super helpful.

Welcome!

Glargine is a good insulin to use. Read through the info stickies on the the insulin works for cats here: Lantus / Levemir / Biosimilars

What dose of insulin did your cat start with in August? How often were dose increases made? Do you test blood glucose levels daily at home? What happened that made you take your cat to the ER? Was it low blood glucose levels? DKA?

What do you currently feed? Dry food is not good for diabetics because it keeps blood glucose levels too high. There are some recommended dry foods that could be fed but even those can keep blood glucose levels high in carb sensitive cats. Dry food is like sugary, carb heavy junk foods for Human diabetics. This board recommends low carb canned food aka the kitty Atkins diet. Some may choose to feed a raw or home cooked diet. Many people feed their non-diabetics the same food to make things easier. If dry has to be fed to the non-diabetics, there are ways to keep the diabetic cat from eating the food such as a microchip feeder.

Welcome to FDMB, We are glad you found this Forum, Sorry to hear about the scare and hospitalization, hopefully you are home testing, most of the member here use the ReliOn Premier human Monitor and strips ,is very important to test before each shot to avoid hypoglycemia the monitor and strips are very inexpensive as accurate, you can purchase it at Walmart if you are in US. Squeem3 asked you very important questions to get to know your kitty, we are very numbers oriented so by knowing your kitty's daily BGs we can assist you on dosing and any concerns you may have, there are many sticky notes in the Main Forum that have much valuable information, keep posting and asking, there are many knowledgeable members available for you 24/7, let us know what State you live in so we can send you a Drs. Food List, and you can see the carb content for each food as well, diabetic cats need to have a diet between 0-10% Dry matter carb, as Squeem3 explained, the kibbles contain anywhere from 20-30% carbs, and cats cannot digest carbs, therefore their pancreas damage. Keep posting, we are here for you
