I'm a newbie at this & i have a question I need a quick response to.
My vegetables blood sugar this morning before I fed her was 8.4 & now she's due for her morning dose of insulin. My question is do I still give her the insulin even though she's in the target range? She is on caninsulin 1 unit twice daily.

That 8.4 is barely above 150 mg/dL.
Stall 30 minutes without feeding and re-test.
If rising and above 8.4 mmol/L , you may shoot, but monitor around +3 to +4 to see how low she goes.
If dropping, I'd skip.
You might be able to drop the dose to 0.75 units *we eyeball this on a syringe).

Hello,

You may be interested to see this extract from the FDMB FAQ's:

Q4.4. My cat's pre-shot level was way below the usual value. Should I give the injection?

A4.4. There's no hard and fast rule, but if you don't have data on how your cat responds to insulin, here are some general guidelines.
Below 150 mg/dl (8.3 mmol/L), don't give insulin. Between 150 and 200 (8.3-11.1 mmol/)... a.) give nothing; b.) give a token dose (10-25% of the usual dose);

There is also the option of 'stalling'; ie, waiting a short while without feeding and then testing again to ensure the blood glucose is rising on it's own to a shootable level.

However, for newcomers to feline diabetes we generally recommend that no shot is given if the preshot level (the test immediately prior to the shot) is below 11 (200). That is to allow some buffer of safety until the caregiver gets some experience of how the insulin is working in their kitty.

Thanks for the feedback. I gave vegetable her breakfast & then gave her .50 of her insulin dose & tested again at almost +3 & she was at 13.4 (241) I'm keeping a close eye on her & she's been eating & drinking ok. So far so good. In the future I'll keep in mind stalling & re-checking her blood sugar before I give her the scheduled dose of insulin.
