she is eating her shreds. do i need to test her again in 15 or 30 minutes, or can i just watch & feed a little at a time?

what type of high carb food do you recommend to keep on hand for these events? hopefully after i get more numbers i won't need it, but just in case.

thanks again!

Tracy,
I would try for a test in 30. And don't let her eat too too much because then she won't be hungry at dinnertime at 8.
I'll get you a list of some good junky higher carb foods to have on hand...
Carl

You need some high carb foods in your hypo kit along with the syrup. The gravy ones are great because you can just feed the gravy and not fill her up

jose shots are @ 9:30 (am & pm, of course) - texas time - CST. but i have been giving 5 units in the morning & only 1 unit at night. when the vet put her on 8u2xday i could tell that was too much. so i backed down to 6u2xday & she still seemed wierd at night. so went to 6 in the am & 2 in the pm. & then 5 in the am & 1 in the pm. someone mentioned earlier that the change in diet is probably why she is having a hard time & the dry food she was eating before was helping her with the excess insulin.

Yes, the change to wet lo carb probably really changed the picture. But I do not understand your vet giving 5 units in the am and one unit at night. The insulin lasts 12 hours. It's a little like overdosing once a day and giving a token for the second shot.

We want you to give the same amount am and pm, 12 hours apart. We would suggest starting at one unit 2x daily. If she is in high numbers, then we can increase within a cycle or two.

But as you have discovered today, there is no way to get the insulin out of the cat once you shoot.

And likely no shot at all tonight.

Tracy,
To echo what Sue said. The dose schedule your vet gave you was not the right way to use this insulin. So yes, he would still get 2 shots a day, but both the same amount. We'll help you figure out the "right" dose.

Tonight, probably no shot. His numbers are nice and low in the "non-diabetic normal" range which is 50-120 or so.
Those numbers don't need insulin at all.
Carl

So sorry, everyone is safe and that is what matters...what is lost is lost...guess I am going shopping this weekend.
how are we doing here, I feel so bad for bailing but Iknow Carl was here...
definately have to reduce...we are all here for you to help you figure the best way to start.
thank goodness it is the weekend!!

Denise,
We are at kitty still in the upper 40s, eating junk food in small doses, and probably not shooting tonight. then going with 1u bid...

and great news that all is safe and everyone okay. the rest? it's just "stuff". shopping can be fun, and you at least won't have to fight last weekend's crowds. ;-)

carl

thank goodness no shot tonight. I was worried about that!
But she is in TX so she is (Ithink) behind us...

Sorry I woke you this morning..( we have to be careful or people are going to start to talk about us!!)
and once again, bless you for helping all of us!!

I am going to have a beer or wine, dont thing it matters
Oh yes, and by the way i love beer and wine!!

Denise, so sorry to hear about your dad's home. i live at possum kingom lake, tx and we had huge wild fires here in april & late august. we were very lucky, but know so many who lost everything. we even had someone near that fed our outdoor kitties that were left behind. horrible. they all made it. thankfully we had wonderful people looking after jose & her sister, rowdy. we were in denver and they got our girls to the vet.

thanks for sticking with jose & me. i am about to try testing again.

Denise....
Let 'em talk! I am soon going out to the grill to cook a nice medium raw ribeye and enjoy a yuengling or three. It is dark, sure, but the night is still young!

Carl

the vet didn't tell me to go with 5 in the am & 1 in the pm. i could just tell she didn't need that big of a dose at night. she had been getting 3 units in the am only for so long, i didn't think it could hurt. but i can see now the roller coaster she has been on.

All that matter is that Jose is ok and we can start over..
please know we are here for you for anything...

You have found a wonderful family to be part of
and this is a great way to start!
Everyone here is wonderful and I thank GOd every day for this group!
I am looking forward to talking to you
and helping you anyway we can

no blood & she is getting testy. i will give a little more shreds. i think we are over the hump (or maybe under the dip would be more accurate), she is bathing and wandering around. i will try again in 30 or so & NO SHOT TONIGHT!

That's good Tracy. Just so you can find out, go ahead and see what her BG is at the normal shot time. No shot, just check the BG. Every bit of data you get will help us and you, and most importanty, her.

Carl

It is probably most likely that she will stay above 40 the rest of the night. But it would be best to get a test sometime in the next hour to be sure.

You have done great today. Your first day of home testing got you lots of practice. And certainly kept your kitty safe!

someone will tell me when to start a new topic post? this seems to be getting bogged down a bit. maybe in the morning, a new day and all.

Just so I don't forget tonight. When you skip a dose, and with the high carb she got today, your number is likely to be artificially high in the am. But we still want you to give one unit and only if she is over 200 and climbing.

Exactly right on everything Sue said, Tracy.

Test any time between now and the normal shot time. But also test then even though you aren't giving her any shot tonight.

In the morning, you need to make sure that her number is at least 200, and that it is on the way "up". Best way to do that is to test her at 8 or 8:30 your time, and then again at the shot time of 9:30. If she's moving up from 8 till 9:30 AND if the 9:30 number is above 200, then shoot her with 1u of insulin. And make sure she eats right at that time.

Carl

Tracy,

Wanted to pop in & say welcome to pzi land. I've been following along but Carl, Sue a Denise seemed to have things well in hand. I tend to lurk and not comment if it's already been said. Feel free to ask any questions that come up; we'll all do our best.to help. Now go get some rest and give Jose a pet.

Yes, that is the consensus. If she isn't above 200 in the morning, then no shot for Jose.

Carl

you all have been AWESOME! one last question: i usually leave her wet food out so she grazes, should i pull it up tonight before i go to bed?

THANK YOU ALL. what a day. and jose still wants to get in my lap, after all the pokes and jabs. she is a sweet girl.

LEt her graze through the night
that will help bring the numbers up and keep her safe
have a great night sleep wih your baby
and we will talk in the morning.....
