According to Dr Pierson, ideal wet food for diabetic adult cat would be made up of more than 50% of calories from protein, less than 40% of calories from fat and less than 3% of calories from carbs. She also states that it's better to stay away from fish. I downloaded the huge spreadsheet of commercial wet food and almost everything that falls into these categories includes fish. I'm really having a hard time picking out the best food for my 17ish lb newly diabetic kitty (he's a snowshoe and this weight is actually normal for his size). According to the caloric intake for his weight he would need at least 340 calories per day of food.

I can't find a food that meets all the criteria that will also not break the bank for us. Can anyone shed any light on this problem we are having...I really have a headache after hours of trying to figure this out with my fiance. Am I doing something wrong, altogether?

Thanks,
Jenn and kitty kid Oliver

Hi Jenn, we feed Fancy Feast Classic Pates (no fish varieties), Evo 95% Chicken, Beef, and Duck, and Merrick Before Grain 95% Chicken. We primarily feed FF for cost considerations, but mix in a little bit of BG or Evo to each meal to pad it out. If you have a Costcos, Sams, or BJs, you might be able to find Fancy Feast or Friskies in Bulk which might help you save some money.

The best FF, imo, is the Turkey and Giblets dinner. It's low in carbs, and Kismet LOVES it.

I feed twice a day altho' KT/diabetic and other main house area civie, Snowshoe, graze. For my crew - 5 males, 5 females, I use

Friskies pates: Turkey/Giblets, Supreme Supper, Liver/Chicken, 1 meal (1/2 can) a week of Tuna in Sauce. Poultry Platter was taken off our list when I figured out it was making runny poops and messy butts on my long haired ones.

Fancy Feast pates: Turkey/Giblets, Chopped Grill, Chicken, Chicken/Liver and Chunky chicken - my only diabetic LOVES the Beef and Beef/Liver but I discovered it spikes his bg. Now I reserve that for times we need a bit higher carbs.

Then there's the lineup of 'drooler' food but I'll not go there... ;-)

HUGS!

I was reading Dr Lisa's site yesterday on the feline obesity page and the 2 case studies she has.
She suggested Merrick's cowboy cookout and feline pride as being the best fit for the ideal feline nutritional profile - she was trying to get the cats in the case study to lose weight (so controlled calories) but not lose muscle mass.

But they are more pricey!!

Feeding 14 civvies right now, I'm feeding Friskies Turkey & Giblet pate, in 13 oz cans ($0.84/can @ my WalMart). Roughly 8 cans per day, divided into 2 meals.

I mostly feed 13oz cans of Petsmart Great Choice, Friskies, and Walmart Special Kitty low-carb pate foods to my crew of 6. Generally 3 total cans per day.
To increase the protein % in the food, I add 1/3c finely shredded/chopped boiled chicken, (leg quarters - $5.90/10lb bag @ Walmart), per 13oz can of cat food.
When turkeys go on sale, I switch over to turkey meat for the protein addition.
