Hi all My cat boy Oliver he is 14. Not over weight and health until this... was diagnosed with Diabetes 11 days ago. With a Glucose of 515. I started him on Insulin 2 times a day at 3 units. You know its a real hit to the wallet, but I wouldn't do anything different. Love him to pieces.
I am in good contact with our vet and doing a Glucose curve right now. Must be a mini one as he told me check every 4 to 6 hours. I read to do every 2 hours?
AM around 8 AM starts pretty high 400 + and this is before meal and insulin then it stays in the high 200's and lowers to right now 4 PM it was 142 which I feel is really good. considering.
I will check it again at 6 and again at 8 just to be safe and try closer to the 2 hours I am reading about. I was suppose to up his level to 4 units this AM but with a lower reading in the evening last night before dinner I was scared to give it to him at all. But did (after I called the emergency vets and asked a lot of questions)and he done well. He Has done well really with it all just drinks and wants to eat all the time, hesitates a bit when jumping and is lazier.
All this said I have also been feeding him a high protein low carb diet. Fancy Fiest Fish, salmon, etc. Starting with only every 12 hours (which is not favored by him or my other cat who is over weight. LOL So this I know can lower the levels on its own. Very fast and wonder if this is not what is happening already. This is all very confusing.
How low can they go and its still safe? I DO NOT want him going low and getting sick. I would rather he stay high and get elevated with diet and exercise. Which he is not interested in at all. :)
Any advise would be Greatly appreciated. I am reading daily to get educated. But want to know the cheapest and best way to HELP HIM.

What kind of insulin and what dose?

In general, we consider a cat fairly well regulated, on insulin, if they are in the mid200s at preshot and near or below 100 at midcycle, but not below 40, which we consider hypo territory. We consider a cat in remission if they range from 40s to 120s, without insulin.

So your 400 preshot sounds high, but the 140 is a good reaction. (a 50% drop is considered good). It will be interesting to see what the rest of your curve looks like.

Prozinc for cats and 3 units twice daily
for 10 days now.
How do I add info to my profile. ?
Hi everyone glad to be a part of this group and am learning a lot all ready.

It is best to have the kind of insulin and dose plus kind of food fed in your signature so we can see it right away when you have questions. Go to the User Control Panel and pick signature. Then put that info in the box and choose Submit.

BTW, what kind of food do you feed?
