Hello..have finally been able to switch over here now that some of my life changes have calmed down some. Meet Taffy - the devil cat. (and let me start by saying that I LOVE this cat or else I wouldn't be going thru all of this with her, but there are days where I do not like her very much - today is one of them b/c she bit the fire out of me while trying to clip her nails). She can be nice on occasion and even be really sweet at times. But mostly we have to be on guard for the swipe or nip when walking close to her - hence the need to clip her nails. She has always had a mean streak but the diabetes has put a whole new spin on just how mean she can get when her BG is high. My DH and I have moved into a small apartment for a year in Philly (from a 3 story townhouse in Pittsburgh that we will be going back to) and I keep telling him I'm not so sure if this place is big enough for me and the cat (jokingly of course).

So...after weeks of patience and practice she will let me test her...if and ONLY IF I can put enough food in a bowl to keep her distracted (usually 1/4 FF can). If only it were that easy for a nail trim (sigh!)
For the most part, I am with my furkid 24/7. She gets her shots and food at 6:30 am and pm. I've been doing midday tests but it's hit or miss with the before bed tests because frankly by then we need a break from each other. But if I thought there was a serious need for it I would do it.

Her 5 Ps are normal (for her - she does purr and growl at the same time and there are days when she can't decide if she wants to rub against me or bite me - and before anyone suggests the water bottle, it usually just makes her meaner - but I do use it if it is close by)

In the morning I will be increasing her dosage from 5.75 units on Lantus to 6 units. If these numbers do not start looking better I will take her back to the vet to see why she is being so resistant to the insulin (her senior panel was run in July 2013 which is how we discovered the diabetes)

Also a lot of her bad aggression issues lately have been because she is a wet food addict. She would eat 10 cans if I let her and she is constantly trying to bully me into feeding her. I feed her 3-4 cans of FF a day depending on how much she harasses me. She is not overweight but has lost weight since the diagnosis. I started feeding her a bit more b/c she was looking too boney in the butt area. She feels like she is around the 12 lb mark.
Man..I feel like I just wrote a novel but wanted to give some background since I am new on this board.
Thanks for letting me vent a little too - I needed it LOL

Welcome! I am from Philadelphia and am sorry to hear that you plan to go back to Pittsburgh....What section of the city do you live in? When we moved there in 1967 we lived in Mt Airy, then Germantown, then Center City, then Chestnut Hill. When I moved out on my own, I lived in the suburbs of Jenkintown, Glenside and later, Phoenixville (past Valley Forge Park, get out to the Park sometime if you can).

I do want to mention that Univ of Penn has a great Vet School and some of my friends in South Philly thank their pets there. Since your cat is on such a high dose, I wonder if there is something else going on there, like my cat.

Welcome to our little home! :thumbup

Welcome to our little corner of the world!! Boy am I glad I don't have the only moody cat. lol

One quick question. Was Taffy started at 2u or is that just where you started her spreadsheet?

Thanks for the welcomes :) we are in northern liberties area. our 1st day here this cat literally had a panic attack because the cable guy invaded her space which ended us up at the e-vet for a very expensive shot of xanax . had I known that was all she needed I would have given her some of mine. they recommended one of the cat only vets and since I was clueless of where else to go that's where I went. so far so good. vet is very good with her and is ok with home testing. she has seen 1st hand how nasty my girl can get and is more than happy to do phone and email consulting but good to know in case I ever need to switch.

Maybe we can trade moody cat stories lol. She came along before DH did and he always asks whyshe's so mean. I have no answer for him. she came that way. I got her when she was about 1yr old and she was born feral

lol Well I adopted Autumn from DCIN (Diabetic Cats In Need ) she is an ex-barn cat and a tortie. Can we say Tortietude!! I've had her for about a year and a half now and she is starting to finally mellow out some but those first months I was wondering if we all would survive her integration into the family. She would charge the other cat. Yes all those names in my signature are mine...12 civies, 2sugars and a huge drooler...lol

Mama Muse...bless your soul! At one time I had 5 cats and learned quickly that was too many for me to handle. As they passed on or moved on (3 were my ex husbands which he took back with him) I decided I am a 2 cat max kindof girl. And now with all this diabetes stuff am only a 1 cat girl. My other passed away this past Feb from CKD at 18yrs old. No way I could handle another animal..this one is handful enough lol.
