Just got our cat Oliver home friday from a week long stay at the vets, thought we were going to lose him a couple times and now this happens, i seen the needle go in we have a little shaved spot where they showed us to administer shots but i saw a wet spot after the shot, feel terrible and scared, i am so glad i found this site, i am learning so much about this disease

I would not give more insulin because you do not know how much went inside the cat and you don't want to give too much. KWIM?

not going to give him any until next time it is due. just do not want him to fall ill, it will be a long day of worrying until his next shot

Sorry to hear about the suspected fur shot. Wet fur or a smell like bandaids are two clues.

Fur shots happen. Note it on your spreadsheet (SS) and chalk it up as a learning experience. Just another part of your crash course, graduate college level lessons in managing a diabetic cat.

Please note that you will have higher numbers for the rest of the day.

Since you never know how much insulin may have gone into Oliver, you should never give more insulin after a suspected fur shot. This is because you may give an overdose and send him into a hypoglycemic state.

One of our sayings here is "Better too high for a day than too low for a minute".

Why was he at the vet for a week? DKA? If so, test for ketones to reassure yourself a bit for today.

Maybe you would like to include some of his test numbers in this post for today since you do not have our standard spreadsheet set up and linked into your signature yet.

took him in monday, initial check for weight loss and alot of drinking and peeing, level was 675. was passing keetones. took a few days to get him stable, would not eat for a time at the vet and his potasium was low. now he looks like he is improving and i had to mess up his shot

So it sounds like Oliver may have had DKA, diabetic ketoacidosis. Did the vet mention that?

It would be a very good idea to do ketone testing on Oliver's urine. You can get the ketone urine testing strips at a drugstore or pharmacy. Wal-mart sometimes has them. You may need to ask where they are kept.

everything checked out ok. second dose of the day went alot better, cat also seems happy :-D i am reading alot of info from the site, i am learning with every sentence i read on here, thank you for the responses.

Welcome to the board. Fur shots happen. I did one tonite and I have been doing this for almost two years. It was funny because my husband volunteered and I said no because he has been giving a lot of fur shots recently, and then I go do it myself !!

What insulin are you using and how much?

Wendy
