Hi I am new. I posted in the wrong place to start first because I was so anxious to ask a question and saw later I should post here first. I gave Puffin her insulin this morning with the Lantus insulin pen and when I took it out it had not dialed back to 0. It had gone from 2 to 1. I usually have the dial facing me but i keep making mistakes. Im not sure what i did wrong. I've been doing it about 10 days. I'm afraid to give her more. Has this happened to anyone else? Thanks
 
Welcome to FDMB, we all go thru trials and tribulations when we work on doing all it takes to keep our cats newly diagnosed with FD, you are in the right place, Lantus is a great insulin is a 12 hour insulin, are you home testing? is important to test before each shot to avoid hypoglycemia, I will tag a very knowledgeable member on Lantus, that can assist you with this concern or any others you may have. are you feeding ow carb foods? diabetic cats need to have a diet of wet can or raw foods between 0-10% carbs, cats cannot digest carbs, this is why their pancreas damage, Kibbles, (dry food), contain approximately anywhere from 20-30% carbs, most members enjoy Fancy Feast pates between 0-10% most use up to 5%, and for home testing most of us use the Human ReliOn Premier monitor and strips, inexpensive and accurate.

Hi Jill and Puffin! Welcome to the forum. I use a vial and not the pen, so I can't answer your pen question. I'm going to also tag some "pen" users who might be able to assist you. We suggest not using the pen. You can insert a syringe into the rubber gasket at the top of the pen and draw off insulin that way. One of the reasons we recommend not using the pens is that you need to prime the pen with each use and you waste a unit of insulin. Ultimately, that becomes expensive! In addition, the pens dispense insulin in 1.0u amounts only. Cats are much smaller than humans and as such, being able to titrate your dose in smaller amounts is safer and gives you much greater flexibility. You want to purchase U-100 3/10cc syringes with half unit markings. \

You can purchase syringes over the counter in some (but not all) states. You can also purchase them through Amazon.
