Hello! I am new to this and so unsure about it all. My kitty turns 5 next month and got diagnosed with diabetes along with other things. She is on lantus, 1 unit twice a day. And i just purchased purina dm wet and dry because dont know which one to get. I was using purina indoor and complete, but she doesn't seem interested in that anymore. I dont have any at home testing materials though. Id love some help and advice. I was not ready to say goodbye to her, i love her and so does my daughter.

Hello,
What is your kitty's name?
Welcome to our club of sugar babies.:bighug:
You could also try posting in the Lantus forum, there are lots of folks to help you out if you have questions about Lantus.
My vet had my kitty on prescription food at first but then I found out it is too high in carbs for diabetic cats. If your kitty is on dry food you have to transition her slowly to wet food. Our kitties do better on a low carb wet food, under 10% carbs or a raw food diet. Check out Dr Lisa's website at catinfo.org as it is loaded with great info on care for a sugar cat.
My cat Smoky was just diagnosed on Sept 6, 2016 so am still learning myself. I have learned a lot from the wonderful people on here.:bighug:

See but i dont even know what questions to ask lol. This is so over whelming abd i just want my kitty to be ok. Her name is Chloe! ♡

Welcome. You can start off by reading http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/...the-basics-new-to-the-group-start-here.18139/

What is most important is to get a glucometre for home testing. It is the only way to keep a kitty in safe numbers. A human one does just fine, no matter what the vet tells you. The strips for the pet glucometre are pricey. If you are in the States, a lot of people use the Relion (Walmart).

Prescription food is expensive and not necessary. The Friskies pates and Fancy Feast pates are low carb. (The Purina DM dry is much higher in carbs than the wet.)

There is an overload of information at the beginning of this sugar dance. Don't worry, it will soon become second nature. Questions and concerns are most welcome.

Hi Casey !! So glad you are here for help for Chloe and yourself :bighug:. We have all been where you are now and are excited to help. I had a Chloe myself..she lived to be almost 20 years old so that is a great name !!!!

Hi and welcome to FDMB. None of ever expect our furkids to have diabetes, but it's even more of a shock when they are so young. My girl was diagnosed at the ripe old age of 4 too! :(

We advocate home testing which not only gives you the ability to make sure it's safe to give insulin and see how a dose is working for Chloe but it also keeps vet costs down because you won't have to take her back to the vet for curves. The other benefit is that most cats get quite stressed out at the vets which elevates their blood sugar so home testing gives you more accurate BG readings. When you start testing you can set up one of our spreadsheets on which we log our readings and share with members here so that if you have questions or concerns, you can get assistance whenever you need it.

Most of our members use a human glucometer and all the reference material here is based on the use of a human meter unless specified otherwise. If you are in the US, the most popular meters amongst our members are the Relion Micro or Confirm both of which need only a small sample of blood and have reasonably priced strips. If you are located elsewhere, let us know where and we can provide suggestions. We have lots of information available here to help you get started testing and lots of other tips and tricks that we can share to make testing very easy. Many of our kitties come to get us at test time and purr through the process which only takes a few minutes. Cats ears don't have a lot of nerve endings so they don't feel anything near what we feel pricking a finger so don't worry about hurting Chloe! She will be just fine.

Dealing with a diabetic cat takes a commitment from you and a tiny bit of time and the first couple of weeks my seem a little overwhelming but you will soon find it's much easier than you think it will be and of course you have everyone here to help you get up to speed very quickly.

If we can get you to set up a signature (the light grey text at the bottom of our posts) with information like your name, Chloe's name, your general location, the diet Chloe is on, the meter you are using when you get one, and any other medical issues that Chloe is dealing with, any history of ketones or DKA, and anything else you think we may need or want to know, it will keep us from constantly asking you the same questions over and over.

To set up a signature, place your mouse pointer over your screen name in the upper right hand screen. This brings down a menu and you can select "signature", the second option in the left column. A text box will appear where you can enter the information you want to share. The signature is limited to three lines so if you run out of space , you can separate bits of info using a slash or "|". When you are done putting info in the text box, click on the "Save Changes" button under the text box to save it and it will appear on all your future posts. You can edit it anytime info changes or you need to make additions.

I'll stop there so you can catch your breath and do a little reading and your bit of homework (signature) :woot:. I'm sure you will have questions once you get started testing but in the meantime if anything pops into your mind, just holler and we'll be here. :)

One of the first and most necessary things you will need to do is go to Wal Mart and get an affordable glucometer ...many of us use Relion . Strips are also affordable . Home testing will allow you to know what is going on with Chloe's BGs daily and give you great peace of mind.

Casey, I see Linda ( MrWorfmensMom) is taking care of you ....she is the BEST, helped Elmo and I thru so much so you are in the best of hands :bighug:. She will be an awesome advisor /help in these early question times !!!! You and Chloe are on your way now :bighug::):bighug::):bighug:

Casey

I am always cautious in overwhelming new members with a lot of information and I think Linda and some of the others have given you some good starter info.

It will help us immensely if you can do a Spreadsheet if you have any BGs from the vet and that you can add to as you start hometesting. If you have any issues with the SS, please send me a private message by clicking on "Marje and Gracie" to the left under Gracie's photo and then "conversations".

Please let us know when you have the glucometer and strips and we can give you some materials to help you with the testing.
