new vial...changes in #'s

it may be too early to say but...tom's #'s have been going up for a few days. not so much at mid day but his morning ps has been in the yellows which is not what he's been doing lately and i thought hmmmmmm, we are down to about the last 25u's left in the lev pen so i popped open a new pen this morning and well, he lowered faster...and hanging longer...the real test will be tomorow morning.
so, forgot, does the lev pen poop out before done? it's been used since jan 10th or so. i know lantus poops out but thought lev did not.
 
I use my pens to the last 12U or so. I don't think it's so much that the pen in use poops out, but that a new pen may have more oomph in it. I have kind of wondered this myself. It's always a good idea to monitor when starting a new pen. Anytime I got wonky numbers and switched pens because of the wonky numbers, the same issues remained, so my conclusion is that old pens don't poop out.

Also, remember it depends on storage. In a stable part of the fridge, away from the freezer compartment (in some fridges if you have them turned up higher, stuff at the back and top if it's a top freezer may freeze) and about 40 degrees is ideal. Also, do not inject back in to the pen, do not reuse syringes. If you make a mistake and need to redraw the dose, get a new syringe.
 
Oh, once you get down to the 12 line it's not much longer before it becomes impossible to draw up insulin because the needle goes above the level of the insulin! I use a short needle too. Doesn't make a lot of sense where the 12 line is, 'cause 50 is right above that, but I have kept going and you don't get too many more draws beyond that 12 before being able to draw it becomes an issue.

I always get 3 months of use from every pen and users on doses less than 1U should get way longer than that.
 
I get 5 mos - to the very last drop (I stick less needle in to get the last bit). I don't think it loses potency. But, yes, it would depend on storage. I keep mine on the side of the second shelf down. Although I used to keep it in the door and never had it get weaker.
 
well the only thing i'm guilty of is pulling out more insulin than i need and slowly pushing it back in to get rid of any bubbles.
it's kept on the botton shelf above the crisper drawers. i hope it's still good...i gave tom his 2nd dose on the nw vial tonight to see if we wake up to some more attractive numbers than the one's we've been getting. if not i'll do one more cycle than revert back to old pen and use up those last 40-50 units.

I push insulin back in as well. The important thing is to not pull the needle out and then stick it back in. I've read the stuff about lubricant inside the syringes. I've done this long enough that I feel pushing excess insulin back makes no difference to the quality of Lev. as long as the needle isn't pulled out and reinserted.

Is this a sterility issue? I have to admit I have done this a few times when I had a stubborn bubble and needed to draw more insulin to get the right dose.
