So we moved and I had to get a new vet for my civie, Niko. I mentioned that I feed only wet low carb. She said she had always said dry was fine until she treated a few diabetic cats. Now she is all for wet and agreed dry does nothing for teeth. This is a small practice in a nearby strip mall with one vet. I think the message is getting out! :-D

Wish my vet would agree with that. He wanted Simon on the dry diabetic food and said that if I fed wet only, he would not take responsibility for his diabetes being out of control. I know they must make a lot of money on that diabetic food they sell but sheesh. My spreadsheet shows that we are on the right track with what we are doing. If I listened, he would be on 3u bid without any monitoring at home and would likely have hypoed and maybe worse...

I love my vet other than this but wish he would listen! Best to you with your new vet. Sounds like a good match.

The fascinating part is that he is right, Joyce. If you change to wet, you would "run the risk" of getting lower numbers and overdosing the cat - IF you aren't hometesting. I really think for some vets, it's all about the safe, conservative approach without too much stress for the bean. Don't test, give insulin and feed dry (so they won't go too low). That probably works for most people and cats - if you never want your cat to have the opportunity for remission.
