New to this Board changing insulin from Novolin N to Prozinc

Hi, everyone. I increased Nicky’s insulin yesterday, Prozinc to 2.5 units (am & pm). Just took his blood sugar on Alphatrak meter after nine hours since morning shot and it is 130! Glad insulin is working, but I’m wondering if after I test him again tonight before PM shot if 2.5 may be too much insulin. Wondering if he may need to be dropped to 2.25 or 2 depending on the PM preshot reading. Any suggestions? Do not want his blood sugar dropping too low in the night. Thank you. Donna

I will tag Janet for you

Hi Janet see #38

Just checked Nicky’s blood sugar again. It is now at 322 after 11 hours since AM shot (up from 130 at 9 hours after AM shot). He did eat 2 1/2 oz wet pate at about 5pm. Will check again about 2 hours before I give shot.

Thank you. I’m a bit more cautious then need be because my cat had a few low blood sugar episodes on Novolin N which is much harsher than Prozinc and I’m not used to the Prozinc, which seems slower and gentler. Appreciate you getting back to me. Will do a BG curve and hopefully figure the right dose.

nice to see a blue... no not too much insulin. we WANT to see blue numbers. remember that normal is 68-150[/QUOTE

I will keep monitoring and most likely go back to 2.5/units. Just want to avoid low blood sugar until I’m familiar with Prozinc. Gave 2.25 units tonight as precaution, but if BG high tomorrow will go back to 2.5 units. Appreciate your help. Don’t really put much stock in any vets’ advice anymore because last year under their guidance my cat had 4 hypoglycemic events in about 6 months. To me this is extreme. The vets mean well but don’t live with the cats daily and so give general guidance. Will keep you posted. Thanks for getting back to me. Have good night.

that 130 does seem like an anomaly. If you ever get a really out of the ordinary number you weren't expecting, it's a good idea to get a second test if you can to just confirm it's accurate. to go from 130 back to 300 in two hours isn't impossible, but it's quite a jump.

Hi, Janet. Yes I thought maybe something wrong with test strip or maybe he ate less yesterday. Spoke to vet today and told her he needs an increase. She suggested going up a whole unit to 3, but I told her I’d rather do 2.5 and then if numbers still too high we could increase in a few days. She told me that was fine and to do a glucose curve for him at home in about 10 days and email her. Glad she’s ok with me doing at home and not expecting it done at her office. She was nice and is going to approve a back up bottle of Prozinc to keep in frig. I used to keep an extra bottle of Novolin N in case. So will keep everyone updated. I’m sure he will need more adjustments, just don’t want to risk low blood sugar! Gave him the 2.5U tonight his BG in 400’s a few minutes ago. Have good night. Donna
