My cat was diagnosed in 2008 and was started on Vetsulin. We were unable to leave her at the vet's office to receive her curves as she was too stressed out. I got on this forum and educated myself very quickly. I decided not to feed her the recommended Science Diet and went with several different wet foods off the list. She did so well and actually went into remission for several months. However late last year she started putting on weight and BG started increasing again. Again we went on Vetsulin but I could not get her under BG under 250 this time. I have been told Vetsulin is no longer available and my vet has switched my to ProZinc. I was quite mortified at the difference in cost but I would do anything for my baby. I will start on this tomorrow and probably do my first curve next Saturday. From what I have read tonight it seems most of you started at 1 unit twice daily. I have never given twice daily and was wondering how that was working for everyone. I will really just like some great advice. I am wondering if the ProZinc was the best to switch to and if I should be doing aything else. My vet is old school but is very receptive when I tell what I have learned. I appreciate any assistance and thank all of you in advance.

Yes, ProZinc is a nice mild, long lasting insulin. It should give you nice gentle cycles during the 12 hours between shots, unlike Vetsulin usually does. We do suggest one unit twice a day to start. Here is some info on ProZinc: viewtopic.php?f=24&t=1979 You can post on their support forum for specific advice. It is not as busy as this Health forum, but there is someone there in the am and pm and they will always get back to you: viewforum.php?f=24

Do you hometest? It sounds like you do. That will help make your transition easier as you will be able to see exactly how the insulin is working. If not, we will urge you to learn and be happy to teach you.

Welcome,Shelley!Sorry you have to be here, but glad to have you aboard. At PZI we pretty much all shoot 2x/day. PZI has a 12 hour duration, so to shoot once means that your cat will be without insulin for 12 hours. If you are interested in posting on PZI, feel free to come over any time (you can find us on the board index---ISG (insulin support group) PZI. Sounds like you have done a good job educating yourself and testing.

As to should you be doing anything else--Are you on low carb wet food exclusively? Check out Janet and Binky's list. There are a number of what we call "stickies" on the PZI board with info you might want to look at.They are at the top of the site.

Hi and Welcome,

We use Prozinc too. Yes we do twice a day injections 12 hours apart and we start at 1 unit twice a day.

Prozinc will take some time to get used to so please come over to our ISG PZI group and introduce yourself so we can get you started.

Sue is right that there are people there usually in the morning and at night but not so much during the day so if you have an emergency or need an answer immediately please post on Helth.

Shelly,
I would say perhaps 90+% of the folks here give their cats insulin twice per day - regardless of the type of insulin. ProZinc can even be given three times a day in certain scenarios. Twice per day is much more gentle than once per day and it generally works great with ProZinc.

The PZI Sticky notes ways to get the best pricing on ProZinc.

I am really hopeful for you that now with ProZinc and shooting twice per day you can hopefully get some really good results.

We've started a newbie checklist in the PZI group [that's still in draft form] but it might make for some good reading:
http://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopi ... 24&t=31358

In terms of "best," the various insulins have their advantages and disadvantages - there is no one insulin that is right/best for all cats and owners/caregivers.

In terms of doing anything else, check out that checklist I linked to and go though the numbered list. And when you are ready, feel free to join us over in the PZI group.

And welcome!

Thanks to you all.

I believe I have read almost all the information for Newbies on the site when I was here in 2008. I also re-educated myself last night as I was starting this new insulin. I am very glad to hear that this one should be good. I do home test and thank goodness Kitty is very good about it. She is on a strictly low carb diet but I do worry about the weight gain a little. Her appetite is also down but from the information I have read this could also be normal. I will try to keep everyone posted as to my progress on the PZI Support Group forum. I am glad that I am not the only one to go through this.

I have always felt that this site was invaluable to me, not only for all the info, but because there were so many people who did not want me to go through this alone!

If you are concerned about your cat's weight, you might try picking out lo carb foods which are lower in fat (from Janet's list).
