My baby Dalai was recently diagnosed. We have spent some time in ER, b/c of hypoglycemic. She is home and in good spirits. We take Pro-Zinc 1 unit 2/day. We are now home testing!!!!

We are both a little scared, but getting through this together.

Hi Tanya and Dalai and welcome to FDMB.

You have come to the right place and we can help you learn to manage Dalia's diabetes. So far you are off to a great start with a good insulin, a low dose and hometesting. What are you feeding Dalia?

It is overwhelming and scary when you learn your baby has diabetes. But I can assure you that it is a very managable disease and you are taking the right steps to manage it. We have all been where you are now and it does get easier. This board will offer you a lot of support and encouragement. If you have any questions, please ask.

Welcome to FDMB, Tanya.

Just checking - was it hypoglycemia - too low - or hyperglycemia - too high?

We strongly encourage home blood glucose testing using an inexpensive human glucometer, with reference values for cats. It helps you know how well the insulin is working and when a dose adjustment may be needed for your cat's safety.

So we dropped Dalai down to one unit 2x's/day b/c of her hypoglycemic attack. Her numbers are going down, but VERY slowly. From 581 to 410 in 3 days. Do we stay at 1unit or push her to 1 1/2?

What numbers does she have midcycle (between 5-7 hours after the shot). Those numbers will tell you how the insulin is working. If she drops low and is bouncing back up high, you might reduce. If she is generally flat, you might increae a smidge.

Cqn we help you set up a spreadsheet? If you want help, send me a pm. (pm button in the lower left hand of my post)

my link should work now. I will check her mid-day levels today and tomorrow. I have not done that before. I'm assuming i should do that before increasing her dose?

Your link is working now! Top job!

And yes, you definitely want to get some mid-cycle numbers before increasing Dalai's insulin dose.
I see that she did have a pre-shot number of 161 on the 4th Aug, so she can drop. And it may be that she is dropping and 'bouncing'. ('Bouncing'/rebound happens when the blood glucose drops too low or too fast. "Too low" doesn't necessarily mean 'dangerously low'. It can be triggered simply by the blood glucose dropping lower than the kitty has become used to.)

Well done for learning to test. That will enable you to get more data; and data (especially mid-cycle data) is vital in determining the right insulin dosage.

The spreadsheet looks good. I absolutely agree with Elizabeth. With no midcycle numbers, you can't be sure whether he is bouncing from lows or whether you need to increase. Bouncing is when their body recognizes a low number and releases extra glucose that sends it up to a higher range.

If you can get a number in that 5-7 hour after the shot range and then around 9-10, that will tell you whether he drops low and how fast he goes back up.

Just a quick update - Dalai is still doing great. Been in remission for quite some time now! However, my other cat has turned into a nut. We switched the whole house out to soft food, and Hiro walks around ALL day looking for food. Don't know what to do about this? Any suggestions?
