Sues Willow

Our Vet. doesn't seem too concerned, but we got blood work back for Willow, and her glucose reading was up to 118 yesterday. Just over a year ago she was at only 81. Willow turned up with mega-colon in Mar. 2010, and she doesn't do well on the miralax, but does very well with the lactulose. Both our Vets. said lactulose will not raise her glucose level, but I'm finding this level a bit to close for comfort. How high does it have to be to be considered pre-diabetic? I hate the thought of tests and needles, we went through this once before about 7~8 years ago with another cat, but he was so badly diabetic poor guy, always reading into the 300~400+ range, never could get him regulated. Willow's so tiny, so hoping the next test will see a lower glucose reading. Thanx for any info once again. Our other guy was Q-Ball, he may still have a pic on your site somewhere.

We consider 118 within the normal range (40-120). I am thinking Lactulose has sugar. Lots of people do use Miralax but I know others things work also. Hopefully they will chime in.

Hi and welcome to the board.

I have a non diabetic cat that takes lactulose(6cc) a day. He did not do well on the miralax either. I can tell you and this is going to sound stupid just taste the lactulose, I did when they switched his lactulose and it looked different. It tastes to me like syrup.
I do not know however lactulose would affect a diabetic cat. I am sure someone here will come along that has a diabetic with megacolon as well that can give better advice.

Hi Sue.......I remember QBall......if you still have a meter, you can test at home. A 118 reading at a vets probably includes stress.

For information:

Lactulose should not be taken by diabetics. Even though lactulose is not readily absorbed by the mammalian intestine, there is still a small percentage which is absorbed. In addition, there may be some unbound fructose or galactose in the syrup, enough to be a problem for a well-regulated diabetic.
