Hi my name is Vegjeta and my cats name is Little brother. He is going to be 19 next month.He was diagnosed with diabetes in 2011.He was on insulin for 3 months and has been controlled with diet.He is going to the vet 2/20/15 for an abscess tooth my concern is about antibiotics and the effects on his sugar levels any advise ?
 
I know you need to watch out for liquid antibiotics in case they're in a sugar base. I'm not aware of any others being a problem in relation to diabetics. A lot of people don't like the Convenia injections but that is not to do with diabetes. Rather it's because it's long acting so that if kitty does happen to have a bad reaction to it you can't just stop giving it.
 
They should not have any affect on his levels. You may see a small spike, but that is most likely due to the infection and not the antibiotics
 
Hi Little brother and I are back from the Vet. after 2 hours,2 x rays and blood work and $500.dollars. The vet said that their was not an abscess tooth,but is teeth need work.The vet said it was unlikely he had diabeties but rather chronic pancreatitis.The vet also said he has enlarged heart and lung congestion. So he is home with anti inflammatory for 3 days and antibotics for 7 days. So I am more confused and ruffled and worried about about my cat.
 
Good Luck with Little brother's home care. I bet he feels good after his dental. It sounds to me , who is not an expert only a fellow cat mom, that you have been taking good care of your baby and must have him on a good diet which seems to be the most important thing. There's lots of info on Pancreitis on FDMB so maybe you can check the symptoms and see what you think? Vets are so expensive and I always leave more confused than I went in!
 
Pancreatitis may elevate the blood glucose considerably. If glucose is over 300 mg/dL for 2 or more days, treating the elevated glucose with some insulin is recommended, according to Dr Panciera who presented at the 2015 MidWest Veterinary Conference.

Hi Deborah and Gadget Actually he didn't have a dental he has lost blood the morning before all over his mouth and chest so I just thought another bad tooth but apparently the vet wasn't interested in that. She even insisted he wasn't diabetic!! and this vet wasn't interested in the blood lost IN HIND SIGHT I should just walked out. His diet that kept his diabetes in check was 4 meals a day and 2 snacks of friskes chicken dinner and defatted broiled chicken that I would blend into a pattee he would get 1/2 tablespoon of the can cat food mixed with 1/2 tablespoon of the chicken.
 
I read your posts thru Sunday on the new thread and I hope Little Brother is doing ok? So weird about the blood. And horrible about your vet. My original vet was so uneducated about diabetes that I am sure my cat would be dead if I had stayed with her. But this site is so helpful to educate yourself if you can just find a new vet to work with or perhaps just call your previous vet that helped you regulate Little Brother? If that's possible maybe that vet can help you over the phone ?
I'm going to try mixing up your formula for cat food! My non diabetic cats are so picky and it's impossible to keep all 3 cats happy.

Oh Gee Wheez picky eaters.Sometimes if you warm the food a bit it helps I know some cats don't like the food cold from the refrigerator. Our other cat"Oreo"was a rescue stray we had him for two years before he passed from saddleback thrombosis, his nose was damaged from dog ear mites and he couldn't smell very well so that made him not want to eat. Apparently if cats can't smell their food they wont eat it. Oreo only ate when he saw Little Brother go eat.
Little brother is getting slooooooowly better,with all the meds and syringe feeding his system is off and he is now not pooping regular,which is no good for his BG levels they tend to be higher if he doesn't poop and drop after he makes a litter box deposit. he was doing so well on vaseline as far as pooping goes,but i have learned vaseline is a NO-NO for cats. Pumpkin only makes it worse and most hairball products have sugar and vaseline in them.So i am now on the hunt for something that will slide the poop out. He vomits cat grass so that doesn't help.

I found that one food I used to give Saoirse tended to constipate her a little. I used to put a tiny, tiny, tiny pinch of psyllium husk into each meal and that helped to soften her stools a little and kept her regular. Caveat: It did tend to make her stools a little wider in diameter.
 
I bought Metamucil capsules and sprinkled it on the two female cats food. The diet change to all canned food caused constipation in both girls who do not have diabetes. My sugar boy ate some of their Metamucil food cause he is a fatty and the vet said it was fine would not raise his BG. 1 treatment worked 2 days later. Prob added 1/8 tsp. but you got other great advice just mentioning it.

Hi with LB I have to be careful of adding any bulk of fiber to his diet because of his big colon issues. He was doing so good with the Vaseline but that is not an option now.

Hi I am using the miralax now it just two days to work on him and then he only gets out 2-3 grape size poops. He is still eating so food going in but not that much coming out. I just don't want him to strain and bleed since he had that mysterious blood loss. I wish the miralax worked faster for him.he is now 15 lbs .So you are using 1/8 tea spoon for ? lbs of cat?
 
Have you gone to cat info.org. Under "Making Cat Food" maybe halfway down the page is a link "constipation" . She says you can use both Miralax and psillium at the same time and discusses dosing.
 
I use an 1/8 for my 5 kg cat. If he is still constipated you can increase to 1/4 teaspoon. Other methods to help things along include playing with him a little as this can stimulate thing along. Grooming him with a brush. Using cat grass, ensuring he is drinking enough water.

It might be that the motion that was already formed won't benefit from the miralax and so he might still have some trouble with that bit. Hopefully you will see the benefits soon. I find that after remi has been poorly it can take a while for his system to get back to normal.

Hi I am giving him the miralax but was only do so once a day so I up it to twice and I am giving him water in syringe because he is NOT a water drinker

Hi I am brushing him since he doesn't groom his bottom half with the arthritis he will wash his back feet but nothing else in the lower part of him.Playing is something i haven't been able to get him to do for years now. He does "laps " around the living room and hallway with me twice a day with harness and leash. Yeah it is the same with Little brother once he gets his system out of whack it takes a while to get regulated again:banghead: Just recently we went from wall to wall carpet to hardwood floors and that big belly of his is always on the icy cold floor he has scattered mats and beds but I do find him on the icy floor.I tried to put him in a thermal shirt to keep that belly off the floor but he just scream "human do you really think I'm gonna wear this!!!" He does have a water fountain and a water bowl but he never really drinks from them I only see him drink from his water bowl right after he eats so that is why I am giving him the water thru the syringe.
 
I think I linked you the IDEXX pancreatitis article didn't i? In there it mentions the use of a painkiller such as buprenex. It sounds like this may be useful to try both for pancreatitis and also the arthritis. The only way you know if it will help is to see how he responds to it.

Remi refuses to wear anything, no matter how many times I try to tell him how stylish he looks:kiss:

Hi I did ask the new vet about a pain killer for LB he was very wary since LB had a negative reaction to the antibiotic he was on. It look like he had a seizure. He Ploop down and his hind leg scrunch up and his eyes dilated a few seconds later he came too and was confused. I tried to call the vet that gave us the antibiotic and she still refuse to talk with me and discuss LB "til all his meds were finished" when I tried to tell her he was having a reaction she hung up I called back and told the receptionist but that office never called back.LB has previously had negative reactions since kittenhood even to shots the only vacc. I can give him is the rabies. the feline aids and lukemenia vacc he has similar seizure/ drunk like reactions. He did recommend CoseQuin maximum strength. I have had Lb on it since the 6th he is moving around and walking around more but is sore I am giving him the ond... nausea pill twice a day even if he isn't lipsmacking and now he has gone back to napping in his fleece bed then back to the floor.The new vet did say that if in a week he is still in discomfort he would slightly up the dose of the nausea pill.

I think it's dreadful that the vet you talk about above behaved in such a fashion! As well as being, in my considered opinion, unprofessional in her behaviour I think it's very alarming that, from what you've told us, she seems to have been oblivious to LB's clinical history.

I'm very glad to read that your new vet seems to be much more attentive to LB's needs and collaborative in his approach. :)

I am also!!! I did file a report with N.Y state vet board about my experience with old vet. I think she should be held accountable, she diagnose and dispensed the meds and then will not take my call about my pet having a reaction. If a human doctor did that...!!!!! The new vet is willing to work with us both financially and treatment wise and was kind enough to prepare me for what is coming in the near future. This vet said we can do what we can to make LB comfortable but in the end it is up to the cat how long he wants to hang on. In an odd way LB being first diagnose with diabetes was so stressful and intimidating that it has prepared me, somewhat, for the stress of his heart and pancreatic issues.

Your new vet sounds so much better! I've learned so much here about how to help Saoirse with her pancreatitis. There are also so many members who are knowledgeable about other health conditions. If there's anything you need help with, please ask and we'll do our best to support you. :bighug:
