new to site please help!

hi i have a 13 yr old cat..for the past year i have been giving him 4units of lantas twice a day..it seemed to be working until a couple weeks ago where the cat was spending time in the litter box while not going to the bathroom...i have never tested his bg but am going to walmart to buy the stuff to do it..yesterday he (chewy) has what i think was a seiure,very scary he was pointed down to the ground with his jaw clinching and his tail bushy and sticking straight up...i put some corn syrup on his nose and he slowly camwe around and i then fed him,he ate the whole can of wet food and seemed to be better after that..now i only gave him 2 units of lantas last night and this morning but i guess without testing his bq the im kinda in the dark...any help would b appreciated and how do i access the chart?

Welcome! It's wonderful that you are going to start testing. Be sure to get the bigger gauge lanets (25-27) as they usually work best at first. It sounds like the dose may be too high, so getting a preshot test and then a test 5-7 hours after will help you see how the dose is working.

Re your food question on the other post, the pates are the low carb ones. BUT don't change until you are testing. You don't want anything bringing his numbers down until you know how low they are.

And you wouldn't know this, but we use candles for a kitty who has died. Maybe go back to your original post, edit and change it to a question mark?

The symptoms Chewy had could well have been hypoglycemia (although seizures can have other causes too).
Well done, you, for having the presence of mind to give him corn syrup. You may have saved him from being harmed!
In the circumstances, until you are testing (and well done too for wanting to do that) a dose reduction does sound like a good idea.

'Hometesting' is, in essence, a simple process, but it may take you a few goes to get the hang of things (just like learning anything new).
It basically involves pricking the outer edge of the cat's ear to get a blood droplet; transferring that blood droplet to a test strip in a glucose meter; waiting for the meter to count down and give you a result; and rewarding the cat with a treat or a wee cuddle.
If you need help you can get lots of advice and tips about hometesting here. And please be reassured that many cats actually come to look forward to the testing process because of the attention (or treats) they receive. cat_pet_icon

What kind of your problems was your kitty having? Consipated? Unable to pee? And is he OK now..?

It's the rely on confirm... Now I just tested before breakfast and he was a whopping 338.. So I have him 3 units of lantas... Here's alittle history on my chewy... He is 13 or so, was diagnosed with dis irises over a year or two ago... Pryor to the diagnostic chewy was very fat and peeing all over and he would gorden himself then throw up.. He seems ok now. It's just such a pain to get blood from him.. The needle is simple now but getting the blood is tough... Like I said earlier his number last night was around 79... I only have him 1 unit, then like I said this morning he was 330 and I gave him 3 units .... The doc wanted him on 4 twice a day

So what is my next course of action? Also I used the lancets that came with the meter instead of the ultra thin ones I bought.. Well there kinda was a lot of blood and chewy was not happy... So if I get a reading of 100 or lower no shot? So if I didn't give him a shot of 1 unit last night his nberz might have been more like 4 or 500?
 
I have asked for some Lantus users to come over and give you some dosing advice. (It's not my insulin and they are dosed differently) As I said on your other thread, it is likely that the one unit on the 79 (which was definitely safer than 4 units) took him low overnight and he bounced for the preshot this am. Your objective is to get two pre shot numbers, 12 hours apart, that are safe to shoot. That may mean lowering your dose and restarting this process, now that you can track how the insulin is working. With Lantus, your lowest midcycle number (nadir) is the number you base the dose on, so getting a number in the 5-7 hour range after the shot is important.

BUT, at the beginning, we just urge new dibetics not to shoot under 200 until they have the midcycle numbers. It is the safest way to start this process. Once you know how low the insulin takes him, then you can shoot lower than 200.

Didn't get a chance to do chewies bg whitin 5-7 hours but I just did it and it says 134... So I give him 2 units? Please let me know and thank u very much for everything
 
Our suggestion was not to shoot under 200, so your 2 units on a 134 is pretty aggressive. I would definitely get some numbers tonight to make sure he doesn't drop too low.

Yes as I read further I saw Chris suggesting just 1 unit twice a day.. I didn't giv chewy anything just yet but I feel 1 unit is ok.. He are several hours ago and will feed him his dinner shortly
