Hi everyone!
Jelly Belly was recently diagnosed with feline diabetes on June 25th, 2015. Its been an emotional roller coaster ever since. As soon as she was diagnosed I started to do research so I could educate myself. The vet started Jelly belly on ProZinc 1 unit every 12 hours. At the time I wasn't home testing her, and he told me not to change her diet and he was concerned because from the last time he had seen her in March she had lost weight. He also told me switching them to solely wet food can be costly since I have other cats as well. However changing a diet would easier for me, than having multiple cats being diabetic.
The vet wanted to see Jelly on July 6th to see how the dosage he put her on was working. When he checked her BG it was at 313 around 5 hours after her am dosage. He went ahead and upped her to 1.5 units 2 times a day. I just started home testing Jelly yesterday and actually set up her spread sheet. I am finding out new information every time I log onto FDMB. It is definitely a life style change for not only Jelly but me as well. I am trying to figure out how much to feed Jelly and how often, since I am home testing I have taken her off of dry food. She use to be a free feeder and lived on dry food, I never realize how bad it was for cats. Now I am feeding her after I test her BG and give her insulin. I switched her to Friskies pate'.
I also read that if I check her BG before her insulin dosage and it is below 200 not to give her the medicine. Like I said this is all new to me, so please bare with me if I ask so many questions! lol
