Hi new here I'm Terri and Razz is my diabetic 15 yrs old baby boy. He was diagnosed 2020 and is on prozinc. I'm not sure what I am doing. I'm on my own trying to figure out diabetes. Just needed some guidance on what not to do lol. I love him to death and dont want to see him suffer from my ignorance. Most of what I have learned is from researching the web. Could really use the help because I have run out of ways to figure out how to continue to provide the right assistance for him. Thanks to everyone one for all the posts I have read so far. I now see I have so much more to learn.

Hi and welcome Terri and Razz!

Can you tell us a little more about Razz’ treatment so far? He’s been diabetic for the last 3 years correct? What insulin is he on and what dose? Also what food are you feeding him?

With a diabetic cat you need:
  • A low carb wet diet that is 10% carbs or under. Most of us use around 4-7% carbs
  • A suitable insulin such as Lantus or Prozinc which are long acting, more gentle insulins than the old insulins.
  • We recommend hometesting the blood glucose with a human meter…it is not necessary to use a pet meter which is expensive to run and is no better. It will keep your kitty safe and you will know how the dose is working for your kitty. Only testing every so often will not tell you what is happening in between those times and an awful lot can happen in even a day.
  • HELP US HELP YOU has information about the spreadsheet, signature and hypo box which you will need to be able to look after your beloved kitty properly
A word of warning though…don’t change the food you are feeding at the moment over to the low carb food until you are testing the blood glucose because a change over can drop the BGs by up to 100 points and we don’t want you to have a hypo on your hands.

We are happy to help you with setting up the spreadsheet, sorting out what food to buy, how to transition safely to a low carb diet, how to learn to home test and much more.

This is an excellent site for diabetic cats…it has been around for more than 25 years and has very experienced people to help you.

Keep asking lots of questions.

Welcome to FDMB!!

We have tons of information to help you along with knowledgable members who can offer support and guidance. Ale provided a link to a post on the basics. We depend on home testing as a means of knowing how Razz is doing and so you know you're keeping him safe.

This is a link to information on our Prozinc forum. It's fine to post here. Once you feel like you're up to speed, you can stick here on Health or migrate over to the Prozinc board. At the top of the board, there are several sticky notes. They provide information about Prozinc along with dosing methods and other important information.

Ale mentioned diet. If you need more information, please let us know. This is a link to a great site on feline nutrition that is authored by a vet.

Please let us know if you have questions. We're here to help.

I missed that you said he’s on prozinc, sorry! That’s a great insulin for cats!! Let us know what guidance you need and what are the things you’re not sure about. We can help and we’re happy to!

Thanks for the welcome. He's on 2 shots a day of prozinc @ 3 half units. He declined pretty fast at the beginning of his diagnosis because he refused to eat wet food and I couldn't afford the in hospital care because of my situation. I really struggled with him every step of the way. He now will eat 3 or 2 cans purina chicken pate grain free morning and night plus human chicken breast baked (plain nothing added)mixed in with food. Was trying to figure out how to do glucose curve because I can't seem to get his blood sugar down below 400. Right now I am dealing with bad breath issues too. Plus he either has neuropathy or arthritis vet still can't make up mind. Just recently developed splitting brittle back toenails said it's just old man nails. So I just looking for ways to deal with his issues right now. Vet said he's not in pain but then asked if I wanted to put him to sleep and I can't do that. Sorry for going on but the last few months have been very stressful. Thanks again Terri

Now I have to find a new bg monitor because I have alphatrac 2 and I cant get test strips so any ideas on a good affordable solution would be appreciated.

If in the US get a Walmart Relion Premier meter. It comes in four models, all use the same strips:
Classic for $10
Blue for $18. It transfers BG to you phine to a Relion app.
Compact for $20. This includes 50 strips whee other models do no include any test strips. It is mall
Voice for ~$20. Th8is one will speak the BG values.

Test strips are $9 for 50 strips.
