Diabetic cat thinking of switching from dry food & canned food diet to freshpet tender chicken recipe. Cat's been diabetic for 2 years now on 5 units lantus every 12 hrs. She weighs 17 lbs. Sorry I may have already posted this question but not sure how to invite all members for answer. Pet's name is Oreo, mine is Marilyn.

Welcome to the FDMB. We are very data oriented here so in order to help you we need you to set up a signature and spreadsheet. Switching away from dry food and to a wet low carb diet
will definitely lower insulin dosing. When you post everyone sees it and is free to reply. We are an open forum. Which insulin are you using? What type of meter?

She said Lantus above. 5 units which is a hefty dose

Looks like she hasn’t returned.
Sorry, I'm having trouble posting & replying, for now I'm going to exit the forum. But do appreciate comments. I'll just work with my vet on transitioning to Freshpet moisture rich tender bites from D/M dried food, I think it would be better for her. She is on 5 units Lantus 2x day & I would really like to get that lower. I don't do any self testing & take her in for fructosame levels at the Vets every couple months.

I understand but what you are doing is dangerous. Cats test higher at the vet due to stress. Your cat is on a huge dose. Switching food is a good start as DM dry is very high carb. The problem is without home testing and eating lower carbs her bg could drop too low. The fructosamine is an average over the past couple of weeks. It will be higher if the cat bounces up and down lantus is dosed based upon how low it takes your cat. You have no idea what that is. She could have a symptomatic hypo. I urge you to get a human meter and start home testing. When my cat first became diabetic I had no intention of home testing as I thought Max would just hide. My vet got me to test at home when Max’s bg was 60 and it was a few hours after mid cycle so I had no clue how low he went. The only way I could tell once I started testing by his actions was he would get very hungry if low. That didn’t happen all the time though.

We are here and willing to help if you ever change your mind.
