Hi
My cat Smudge (now about 14 years old) was diagnosed with Diabetes about 16 months ago. She is now in Remission (8 weeks now since her last Insulin). When she started her readings were up over 30 mmol (540 mg/dl). She came down to the mid teens middle of last year. Then there was fireworks nights (fireworks are still legal here 1 day a year) and she shot up to 23. It was a month before she started to come down again. Highest reading she's had in the last 2 months is 7.8 mmol 30 minutes after eating.
She was on Lantus/Glargine. So it was a long journey, but worth it. I think she would have gone into remission sooner but for the first 4 months the Vets she was under were incompetent and they almost killed her. Where I live the nearest vets were 500 km away. I took her away from these Vets and put her under Vets in another town 700 km away. With a 1,400 km round trip to the Vet Clinic I doubt you could get a more difficult situation for a Diabetic cat. But they were marvellous. And mostly we had phone consultations.
Smudge had all dry food withdrawn ( she loved her dry food, but I don't think she misses it now). It was hard to know what food to feed her in Australia. She started on a Prescription Diet for diabetic cats but I discovered it had more carbs than some Whiskas varieties, and she hated it. She now has 8 varieties of canned Whiskas - the 4 fish loaf varieties and the 4 meat loaf varieties. No gravy ones (she never really liked them anyway) and no vegetable/rice/etc ones. At night she has pet meat raw. She has gained back all the weight she lost. And she loves her food again.
So I have posted to give others hope and to say if you don't get remission straight away, hang in there. And if you're not happy with the Vet, get a new one. The next Vet can't be further away than what mine is!

Hello Smudge's family!
Welcome to our -- now your -- furry family forum!
What a nice post for all the newbies to read... I know what you mean about vets. I am a furry family of 3 - and on my 4th vet. I will find one that I feel knows what they are doing but also has respect for me, my questions and concerns and most of all my love for my girls.
My sugar Bean is also in remission, please glance at her spreadsheet if you would like. She was not on insulin long at all. I owe that all to this forum. If it were not for the ppl here, my Bean would not be with me today. They taught me to feed low carb foods, to test before each shot, to test in between and not to be afraid to speak up at the vets office. They taught me to be very very careful with insulin and amounts that I gave. They taught me how to treat a hypo very very late at night. They taught me to NOT listen to my vet and to keep her alive! I am soooo thankful and so is she!
They also taught me that REMISSION IS POSSIBLE if the situation is done correctly...
Thank you for this post Smudge!

How nice of you to post your story of hope. Natures Gift would be another option for Smudge if it's available where you are. I give Vyktor Ziwipeak now but given that there's only one supplier in the whole of Western Australia I doubt you'll have that one at your local store!

Hi territorian. Would that be the Northern Territory? I lived in Darwin for about 20 years.
My two cats have whiskas loafstyle, mainly the chicken varieties. And NaturesGift.
I've sent some emails asking for carb content for some other varieties, if I ever hear back and locate more useful brands I'll post here.
Well done with your cat.

Thank you for the welcome. I wish I had found your forum when Smudge was first diagnosed. I went to another forum and was made to fell most unwelcome. I was supposed to have read the owner's book first, but where do you get that in a hurry in the middle of the NT? The moderators would not allow me to ask any questions and if I did they just deleted them, and they would not help me in any way themselves. I guess they are just a select little group who help each other and bugger anyone else. It's so nice to find a forum that is what a help and support group for our babies should be.
I have never seen Nature's Gift up here. I believe some of the Fancy Feast varieties are okay too, but I have 12 cats and they all eat what Smudge does so those little tiny cans are no good for us.

Welcome to the FDMB family! cat_pet_icon

And thank you for sharing your story! :-D I, too, had to shop around for a vet that was not only familiar with feline diabetes but also treated me with respect. It's well worth the hunt!

Welcome to the forum!!

The people here are really wonderful and have given great advice. I had a turtle named Smudge when I was a kid, that's a cute name. :) Sounds like he's doing really well. I've been feeding Evo and Blue but since I only have one cat that eats it, the cost is not as high.
