Hi
My cat Smudge (now about 14 years old) was diagnosed with Diabetes about 16 months ago. She is now in Remission (8 weeks now since her last Insulin). When she started her readings were up over 30 mmol (540 mg/dl). She came down to the mid teens middle of last year. Then there was fireworks nights (fireworks are still legal here 1 day a year) and she shot up to 23. It was a month before she started to come down again. Highest reading she's had in the last 2 months is 7.8 mmol 30 minutes after eating.
She was on Lantus/Glargine. So it was a long journey, but worth it. I think she would have gone into remission sooner but for the first 4 months the Vets she was under were incompetent and they almost killed her. Where I live the nearest vets were 500 km away. I took her away from these Vets and put her under Vets in another town 700 km away. With a 1,400 km round trip to the Vet Clinic I doubt you could get a more difficult situation for a Diabetic cat. But they were marvellous. And mostly we had phone consultations.
Smudge had all dry food withdrawn ( she loved her dry food, but I don't think she misses it now). It was hard to know what food to feed her in Australia. She started on a Prescription Diet for diabetic cats but I discovered it had more carbs than some Whiskas varieties, and she hated it. She now has 8 varieties of canned Whiskas - the 4 fish loaf varieties and the 4 meat loaf varieties. No gravy ones (she never really liked them anyway) and no vegetable/rice/etc ones. At night she has pet meat raw. She has gained back all the weight she lost. And she loves her food again.
So I have posted to give others hope and to say if you don't get remission straight away, hang in there. And if you're not happy with the Vet, get a new one. The next Vet can't be further away than what mine is!
