Hello, my cat Rune was diagnoised with diabetes just this last weekend. Of course being so new to this I have a million questions and I really feel that my vet is not as helpful as I'd like her to be. Plus I wish I could have a person at my house to help me with everything! So I hope you guys can help me out!im so glad I found a message board.
Ok first we are suppose to give her Lantus Glargine twice a day. Yesterday was her first day on it. She gets 3units now my first question is she weights 16 lbs. is 3units normal or kinda high? Because I gave her the insulin in the morning she threw up then she seemed fine then at night I checked her levels and her number was 3.8 (sorry don't know what that is in the other number I live in Canada sorry) which is really low so I didn't give her another shot. I left it I fed her like normal (yes I changed her food it's all good that way) anyways so this morning I checked her levels again and it was 13.2 so I gave her a shot then she threw up again. So is that normal? Or is 3 units to much do u think? I phoned my vet but she's to busy today and might not get to call me back I'm really worried! What do I do if she's low again tonight do I do the same thing all over again? Is it always gonna be one shot of insuline a day? Seems weird low at night high in morning.
Ok and another question my vet said to give her the shot while she's eating cause then she's distracted and the shot doesn't bug her. But a friend who has a diabetic cat said his vet told him to feed his cat then wait 45mins-60mins later then give her the insulin because it does make them puke usually and eating is very important. So when is the right time to do the insulin shot?
And last question if 6-10 is normal for numbers for her anything below 10 I shouldn't give her a shot right? Cause that would send her into a low right?and she might crash? Cause I work all day. I would not want her to go into a hypoglycemic shock when I'm not here. But higher then 10 then give her the shot?
Thank you so much to anyone out there that can help me out! I appreciate it so much! I feel completely overwhelmed I just wanna cry! Anyways thank u!
