NEW TO EVERYTHING. Intro

Boomer

Member Since 2025
Hello,
Im Theresa in N Scottsdale, AZ.
My Boomer is 13 years old DOB:04-20-12 he's part maine coon and he's about 17 pounds now. His healthy weight was 20 lbs until bs went haywire.
He began eating and drinking to excess but losing weight in Jan 2025. Vet said high BS and we used libre 3 and Lantus. Got him into remission by April.
November 2025 symptoms reappeared.
I had all the stuff that I hadn't used from January and the librae 3 following last instructions from vet. I began to administer insulin and monitor bs using the alpha trak3.
I have not been able to get his bs under 300.
Insulin is 2.5 units every 12 hours.
I dont know what to do next?
A veterinary visit right now is impossible. I did get a new prescription of Lantus a week ago, but results are still the same.
Any advice would be so very appreciated. Im feeling lost, confused, frustrated and scared for Boomer.

Hello and welcome to you and sweet Boomer. Sorry to hear he's come out of remission. When did he last see a vet? Just wondering if he needs a dental, which is one of the most common reason cats fall out of remission. Any other medical issues?

If you want to save money, I'd go to Walmart and get one of the Relion meters, I think the Premier is commonly used here. Their test strips are way cheaper.

What food is Boomer eating now? The type of food can make an impact on his blood sugar. There are a few things we need to know about your kitty (like food) that can go in your signature. Details here: New? How You Can Help Us Help You! Did you start him back on 2.5 units? How is his appetite? He seem otherwise OK?

Thank you for your response. Im not really computer savy, but will figure out the signature to put all info in.
His last vet was in April 2025.
Hes never had dental problems or work.
No other medical issues
Currently he eats Temptations kibble with blue tasteful salmon puree as a small topper. He refuses to eat his wet food anymore, which is temptations wet sliced chicken or salmon.
Im not sure how to tell low carb high protein in cat food that's affordable.
Currently he's on 2.5 units of Lantus every 12 hours. Hes always been a grazer, so I allocate his required amount of 3/4 to 1cup to half in AM and half in PM.
His appetite comes and goes. Only nibbles someday, others acts like he's starving (he'll eat super fast then vomit).
He has had increased urination, to where I have pee pads down infront of his litter robot. He will go in it to poo, but seems to miss for pee, which has only happened when his numbers are high.
He has been acting pretty normal. Sleeps a lot during the day .. but stays up all night.
Still opening all the doors and cabinets in the house each night.
I've had him on 2.5 units for 3 days but it looks like its not helping. Here is a look at his numbers for Sunday, Saturday and Friday.
Friday
474. 10:40A 2.5 units Lantus & food
498. 2:13P
416. 10:26P 2.5 units Lantus & food
Saturday
400. 10:30A 2.5 units Lantus & food
379. 1:52P
409. 5:46P
364. 10:16P. 2.5 units Lantus & food
Sunday
496. 11:25A 2.5 units Lantus & food
365. 2:09P
344. 5:45P
473. 10:25. 2.5 units Lantus & food
Monday
557. 10:30A 2.5 units Lantus & food
I will work on the other required signature page and spreadsheet as I can.
Thank you for your help ... im unsure if I should go up on the Lantus or ?

Tagging Bhooma @Bandit's Mom who might be able to get your spreadsheet/signature set up. Without seeing more data, we can't suggest any dose modifications yet.

What will actually help him better is getting onto lower carb food. Temptations are high in carbs. I just looked up the ingredients of one of the flavours, the first was a meat by product and the next 4 ingredients were all carbs! A number of people here feed either Fancy Feast or Friskies wet food as cost effective meals. Wet food (or raw) is really much better for cats, and way better for diabetics. Maybe some tips here will help:

Thank you. I will switch him to Fancy feast wet food, or Friskies as soon as I have the extra finances. I had just stocked up on his dry food and he won't eat the wet food (Temptations wet pate or sliced meats).
I have updated the signature information with what I have, if I could please get some advice regarding increasing Boomers insulin or should I lower it? He still has symptoms like drinking a lot of water, gobbling his food and going outside the litterbox, but his weight is stable and he is acting normal again.
I just feel stressed that I can't get it under control. Its very high most everyday.
Thank you both for your help

Theresa ... Boomers mom

Once the spreadsheet is set up, we can definitely take a look at the data and see if he needs his dose changed.
