Robin, I hope your fingers are better! Alas, I slept through my alarm. I'm placing it closer to my head tonight. I'm less tired today so shouldn't sleep so deeply as I did last night. I'm off work today and tomorrow so should be able to get tests in between errands and such.

Hi everyone. I was talking to a diabetic friend of mine about Desi and she said that there is a theory (or is it a fact? I don't know) that fasting causes the liver to release sugar into the blood stream. It's true that Desi's numbers are highest after he's had the longest time without food (we don't feed him during the night). Has anyone else heard about this? Would it make sense? In any case, we are thinking of feeding him a bit some time in the middle of the night to see how it may affect his AMPS number. Nothing else we seem to do phases it very much. It is consistently higher, no matter how much insulin we dose him with the night before, or how much we adjust the cycle (11/13, 10/14, etc.). In the meantime, I guess we will stick to either 0.2 or 0.4 if he's over 200. What do you all think?

Those doses sound good. Yes, some people give small frequent meals instead of two larger ones because they feel it supports the pancreas.

We give him the frequent meals throughout the day but not at night. So we will see tonight and I'm curious if it makes any difference. Thanks, Sue.

I know his numbers are a little frustrating. But don't lose sight of the fact that he is on a tiny dose and getting good numbers overall. It may be that you just need to give him some time.

Other than the numbers, how is he? Playing, grooming, eating well, pooping and peeing?

Hi Sue:
Thanks for the reminder that overall he seems to be doing OK.
Yes, Desi seems good otherwise (alert - he's hasn't been real playful in years but he's more than he had been right before this), grooms, eats (always) and eliminates. Not drinking the ton of water that he was. We need to start tracking his weight. He is such a large framed cat with a big head, etc.
Mark gave him a snack some time in the middle of the night and his AMPS was in the yellow for the first time in awhile - maybe a coincidence but we are going to keep with the midnight snack for now and see if it stays that way.
I also would like him to see a new vet but we have to find one in our area first who respects what we are doing and is willing to work with us. The old vet had mentioned that Desi has some bad teeth or something and I know that could be affecting his BG level. For some reason the old vet didn't prescribe antibiotics - just focused on the insulin but mentioned the antibiotics in passing and now I wonder if we should follow up on that - with a new vet.
Thanks for all the support!

If you live in or near a decent sized city, you might ask for vet help on Health. If someone is near you, they might have a FD friendly vet. If not, @BJM has good vet questions - call first and ask some basics.

Glad your amps was better!

Hi:

Can someone look at Desi's SS and give some input? I think the midnight snacks have helped lower his AMPS number. Things are seeming (as soon as I write this, it will be different of course!) out into yellow range...if so, do we increase the dose? We definitely have two shootable numbers these days. I'm assuming that the goal is to shift the yellow to blue to green, but I'm not sure how to go about it.

He seems his usual self in other respects.

Thanks in advance!

Yes! Like those amps numbers much better. Midcycle the numbers are flat and a little higher than we want but they don't seem to cause a bounce, which is great. I think I'd give 0.3 a few more cycles and maybe we will get some more useful data about whether to increase/decrease.

The good news is that those yellows are near the renal threshold, where we think the pancreas can heal. We still debate what the actual threshold is but I think generally the consensus is somewhere between 180 -270. I know, a big range, but we have no real scientific data as scientists don't spend much time working with cats......

Hi Sue: It's been a few more cycles. Do you advise to keep at 0.3 or to change it in any way?

It looks like he can drop more to me. Maybe on the first cycle you can monitor, go up to 0.4 and see how it looks. I know 0.4 took him low but that was quite a few cycles ago and things can change.
