New Thread for Coulee

I am copying a newbie thread from Coulee's Mom and Dad:

I love and pain for our cat Coulee, but my husband on the other hand, has been devistated by the affect diabetes has had on our newly diagnosed kitty. The thoughts we may run out of all kinds of options with finance being close to the list are overwhelming. I can't bare to watch him sob profusely and at unpredictable intervals. Here is a peek into his adornment to our special one. One June day 10 years ago, my husband heard a noise outside of our den window and went out to investigate, as he walked closer to hedges under the window, out charged a tiny little fur ball that attacked his shoe laces. Instantly, he was a new father! He loves our cat so much and I understand this, yet his feelings of fear is transforming my efforts to feel hopeful, to feeling helpless! What to do with so many concerns, and sore and raw emotion???

Will it help to know we were all overwhelmed and terrified at first? But, once we started learning about this disease and how we could help our cat, it got so much easier. And we can teach you! That's what this forum is all about. Everyone who replies to you is paying it forward for help they received in the beginning.

We test our cats at home, not only because it is more accurate (stress raises blood glucose levels and most cats are very stressed at the vet) and saves money, but it keeps them safe to know exactly what their levels are and how the insulin is working.

We feed wet low carb food which helps lower their levels and keep them hydrated. A vet explains why here: http://www.catinfo.org

And we start with a mild long lasting insulin at a low safe dose. The preferred insulins here are lantus, Levemir and Prozinc.

Using these methods, hundreds of cats have gotten regulated and hundreds have gone into remission. Diabetes is one of the better diseases for a cat to get - it can be managed at home safely and without many complications, it is survivable and even possibly curable.

Give us some more info: Is Coulee on insulin yet? What kind/what dose? Can we teach you how to test him at home so you can safely feed him a low carb diet?

Please know diabetes is NOT a death sentence. It just takes some educatuon and helpful folks, like you find here.
Yeah in the begining it can be overwhelming and a little pricy but there are ways to cut costs and really, education is your BEST chance at helping Coulee.

The people here are so helpful and kind...give em a chance...Ask questions. There is a WEALTH of experience and information here.
