New Spreadsheet/Thick fur question

I finally had a few minutes to create a spreadsheet and post again. Vet originally wanted Tootoo started on 2 units per day with no testing. Oooooh. Scary. I feel much better following the protocol recommended here, and things feel on the right track.

I do have a question about shooting into thick fur. Tootoo, although Siamese, has a really thick coat. A couple of times I've felt like I wasn't getting the insulin in. It's hard to tell with his thick fur. Any recommendations short of shaving, which I don't want to do! I am getting better at everything thanks to all the advice here. His poor little ears are less and less bruised from clumsy pricking. I have one more day off tomorrow to do frequent checks, then back to being gone all day.

Have first vet appointment next Friday since starting him on insulin. They want to do the all day curve in their office. I know he'll be stressed and have higher numbers, and I know I'll be scolded for not following their protocol of 2 units twice a day and not using the outrageously expensive monitor they want me to buy. We'll see how that all goes.:-)

Oh, and he is completely off dry food now. Mostly Fancy Feast Classics.

Hope my spreadsheet shows up. If not, back to the drawing board. I tried to post a photo but had trouble with file size?

You have to add the link to your spreadsheet to your signature in your control panel.

Can you just trim the fur rather than shave it? Are you shooting in the scruff area? If so, there are several other places that you can shoot where maybe the fur isn't as dense.

Syringes come with different needle lengths; you may prefer the half inch ones.

Would a comb work to part the fur or is it too plush?

I've seen where people have wet the fur a little to move it out of the way too.

Great ideas - thanks! I'll try the comb and wetting the fur- and then trimming or the longer syringe if that doesn't work.

Carl, so sorry to hear about Mullet. That was quite recent.

What does OTJ mean? And dancing?:)

I think I just forgot to save the spreadsheet. It seems to be on my signature now.

Thank you!

OTJ is "Off The Juice"... a kitty that no longer needs insulin, which we also call remission. Bob is still a diabetic, for instance, but no longer is on insulin and is able to stay in normal numbers on a low-carb diet.

Dancing - we call this whole feline diabetes treatment the "sugar dance". So because I no longer need to test and shoot Bob, for now anyways, his "dancing days" are over.

Oh, and TooToo's spreadsheet seems to be working fine. And his numbers today look very nice

Thanks Carl. That's encouraging that Bob is OTJ! Love the jargon. Shot went better when I parted fur.

If you go take a look at the Lantus Tight Regulation forum, you'll see several threads that have a big yellow and black icon on them that says "OTJ" on it. Those would be other kitties that have also gone "OTJ" recently. And it can happen to any cat, on any insulin. Bob did so pretty quickly compared to other cats, but he's not an exception by any means. At least one per week seem to do that around here. :-)

Guess what? TooToo earned a dose reduction with that 46 you got today at +5 in the AM cycle. Reduce dose by 0.25U. Should be 1.25U now instead of 1.5U.

Looking good!

ETA: Would you add the meter you are testing with to your signature? Please?
