Hello all. I bought my last bottle of Prozinc in March. I got about two more weeks left before it is empty. That is seven months on one bottle. Since the beginning of August, Merlin's BG numbers have improved so I am assuming the insulin is still working or maybe I just been adjusting to older insulin. Anyway, I am not sure what to expect when insulin starts to get old. So my question is, should I make any special considerations when starting a new bottle? Could it be stronger than the insulin that I am using now? Do I continue with the same dose that I have been giving to Merlin or should I decrease the expected dose? As always, many thanks to everyone here on this site!

Hi Cindi,

I think I would just plan to start the new bottle on a day I could monitor and go with the same dose. You could give a smidge lower, if you are more comfortable.

I always had new bottles of ProZinc work better. Often a lot better. I have no idea why.

The potency tends to diminish over time, even when cared for well.

When starting a new insulin bottle, you may want to knock off 0.5 to 1.0 units and check the nadir period a few times to see how much difference there is.

Or, have your hypo kit ready and be prepared to steer the numbers by testing and feeding frequently to avoid hypo.
