My kitty just got her new sensor after several days without one. She hadn't eaten since 10 this morning because she was sedated for the vet. Just woke up. I was surprised when her glucose is 297. I am very aggravated at myself. I have to get her regulated because she still is losing weight. I will giving her the usual one unit this evening. So I am tracking her numbers. Beyond that; don't know much.
Does anyone have a legal treat that your kitty really loves. My kitty walks away from the healthy ones. She may be high today because I was desperate to get the gambapentin in her and sprinkled a minute amount of a bad treat on her food to get her out for the medicine. I am finding this disease very slippery. You don't adjust dose based on the immediate glucose level. This all has been challenging. I read the website and I think have begun to understand. It is very complicated to me...

@Diane Tyler's Mom you are so good at helping new people get set up with spreadsheets and choosing a dosing method. Can you post some things here to help?

You are right about not dosing based on immediate glucose level. Doses (and increases and reductions) are based upon how low the dose is taking the cat (nadir). What medications is she on? Could you add that to your signature? Once you get a spreadsheet set up (we can help you with that and take care of everything,) we can help you with dosing. I am glad that you are testing/tracking glucose via the sensor (is it a Freestyle Libre)? This is the only way to keep your kitty safe (testing/gathering data) from a hypoglycemic event. I'm glad you've been reading the website. There are lots of us here to help answer questions/offer clarifications.

Regarding treats: what kind of treats have you been giving? What are the "healthy ones?" and what are the not so healthy (I assume high carb) ones. I assume you've tried the Pure Bites Freeze Dried treats (chicken, shrimp, etc.) My cat loved the chicken ones (some love the shrimp). What about pieces of boiled chicken cut up into bite sizes? Anything that is pure meat is good and low carb. What does your kitty like to eat (besides Fancy Feast?)

Thank you very much. She doesn't care for any of the purebites. So when I'm desperate to get her to eat for a shot I have sometimes crushed a temptation type treat and take a few crumbs and put it on her food. I am horrified that I have used this. I have also used a little bit of mozzarella low fat cheese to put one of her pills in. I know this is bas but sometimes I am at a loss and need to give the shot or pill to go to work. I am confessing so hopefully I won't do this anymore. But for example after I give her the cerenia pill she has to eat something. I take a crumb of a treat and put it on soupy food and she eats it happily. I don't know what to do. If she doesn't eat after that pill it can hurt her. All suggestions very much appreciated.

You are right about dry pilling being dangerous. I'm glad you know this! Now I won't have to climb up on my soap box about dry piling causing esophageal injuries. Have you tried sprinkling Forti-Flora on top of the food to get her to eat. Also, there's not really anything wrong with cheese. It is low carb. I wouldn't bother with low fat cheese -- it just has more carbs. Cream cheese is loved by lots of cats and so is some parmesan cheese sprinkled on top of their food.

Also, I used to put a few pieces of Dr. Elsey's clean protein dry kibble on top of my diabetic boy's food. He loved it (of course, he loved everything). It wasn't enough to impact BG as Dr. E's is low carb. My cats are currently loving the rabbit formula (which they also only get as a little bit of a food topper from time to time, never a whole meal).

Thank you. What is forti Flora? Cream cheese might work. Once I was trying to hide a pill I something. I went to the store and bought two kinds of cream cheese, tuna sardines etc. She was totally on to it and picked out the pill or smelled it and walked away. I ate everything but the sardines.

Forti-Flora is something that can be sprinkled on cat food. It is marketed as a probiotic, but it really only has one particular strain of probiotic in it so it's not that great as a probiotic, but most cats are absolutely crazy for it when sprinkled on their food -- so it's a good way to get them to eat. A lot of vets sell it (at a high price) but you can buy it from Chewy.com for less. So I take it you cannot pill her?

Where do you live? I went to middle and high school in Alexandria, VA and lived and worked (in D.C.) there for many years until we moved away in 2007.

Sending you tons of empathy and understanding. My first months treating Lando were a huge challenge! It got better
Lando loves inaba churu and freeze dried chicken for treats.
Best of luck we are all rooting for you!
