New Nigel Question

Hi, all -
Things have been going well for Nigel. I am also getting a bit better at home testing. Far from experinced but have less terror now. It still takes me at least 3 pokes to get blood but I get a good drop right away. Some of his BG's have been 90 and 101 before a meal and I took one two hours after he had eaten and it was 89. He has had NO insulin since Tuesday morning Mar.8th. If he is now in remission--or maybe never was a true diabetic--time will tell. I have been wondering what all those doses of insulin were doing to his body twice a day if he possibly didn't need it???? I obviously know about the seizure and close to dying scare he had but overall, were areas being harmed?? This is a 16 yr old cat with heart disease. I have searched through some of the info on this site but nothing to answer my question. Maybe I have missed a link. Maybe someone out there knows an answer or a link that would help me understand this? Thanks.

I don't know the answer to the damage question.

We consider a kitty in remission if they run between 40-120, with most numbers in double digits, for two weeks straight. Nigel would then be a diet controlled diabetic, with the possibility of going back on insulin but hopefully not. And no dry food!

So glad the testing is getting easier. It still sometimes takes me a couple pokes too. Based on your other post, I would say that Nigel was diabetic, since you had him on insulin for so long, and that the diet change lowered his carbs and need for insulin. That's what happened for me and Max (diet controlled). I can't answer your question on if there's any damage if a cat's blood sugar his low but without hypo symptoms for a period of time, but my hope is that there isn't. That's great news that Nigel is staying in the normal range on his own!

Good morning, Lorraine! I don't have an answer for your question, but I'm going to go w/ a theory....it is a possibility that Nigel's pancreas was faultering and at one point, needed a little push to get it going again. The insulin did that and his pancreas is now working for him. Maybe his seizure was insulin related...not sure about that one. So, with him not having insulin since last Wednesday, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that it is a big possibility that Nigel is in remission now. I would continue to test for at least another week, maybe a little longer and see what his numbers are. After that, I think it would be safe to say he is in remission. I'd continue to test him occasionally just to make sure all is well. Can't hurt to know his numbers!
I'm glad you are having a better time of it now. I knew you could do it!
