Hello-

I've gotten my spreadsheet up (thanks to Chris & China), so it's ready for your perusal and feedback about what you think is best for dealing with Maxi's diabetes plus early kidney disease.

Maxi was diagnosed with early kidney disease last October and put on Purina canned early stage kidney food.
A week ago, he was drinking excessively, so I took him to the vet on Jan 27, and that's when he was diagnosed with diabetes. The vet said his kidneys were better though. He's off the kidney food and on Weruva low carb, low protein wet food.

Copies of test results are also attached.

Any insights would be much appreciated.

@Marje and Gracie give very insightful interpretations of test results. Glad Max's kidneys are doing better!

Good job on getting the spreadsheet up and running. The help you get on this forum relies on the information from the spreadsheet so it's great to keep it up to date. Have you decided what kind of dosing protocol you are going to follow? Tight Regulation or Start Low and Go Slow?

Great you have the SS up and running.
Just looking at the lab results you have posted (they can be put in with the SS btw...there is a spot for lab results and much easier to read.

I not sure why Maxi was diagnosed with early kidney disease because his latest results are all pretty good. Maybe because you have been giving phos binder, his results are better......I'm not sure. We'd need to see his previous results.
His SMDA is 11 and that is on the upper edge of normal (that is a test which can pick up CRD earlier than other tests.)
His creatinine is 2.4 and on the top edge of normal. BUN was normal.
Phosphorus was normal. Do you have earlier lab results?
I see the urinalysis from last October shows a SG of 1015 which is low but the recent one in January shows a SG of 1033 which is much better.
ETA I've just relooked at the lab for urinalysis..the USG is not documented in the lab column of the SS......so I had to enlarge the photo above and it looks like the second USG could be 1013 not 1033.
Not sure why you are giving a low protein diet, but that is not indicated even if Maxi is in early kidney failure. It is the phosphorus you need to control, if in fact he does have early CRD. If you give a low protein diet, he will have muscle wastage. Low protein diet in the earlier stages of CRD is old thinking.

Welcome to the group!

One thought on the labs... The next time you take Maxi in to the vet for a check up, you might ask about getting an SDMA test. This is a lab test that is part of a general lab panel if your vet uses IDEXX for outside labs. The test is predictive of kidney disease.

Sienne, the SDMA is on both sets of lab results attached above and mentioned by Bron.

Bron, I am really confused now. I read a recommendation (linked by this site) for a low protein diet for kidney disease. To make sure I understand, you're saying that Maxi's labs do *not* show signs of kidney disease? I don't have earlier lab results. The last time he was at the vet a year or so ago, the vet said nothing about kidney disease. The vet's diagnosis was based on the October visit.

Since the October visit and until last Monday when he was diagnosed with diabetes, he's been on canned Purina early stage kidney diet. That was stopped and now he's on Weruva chicken fricasee and paw lickin chicken and a phosphate binder. Epkatin. He takes a 10cc scoop 2 times a day in his food. Is that enough? Too much?

I'm also now very worried about the food I'm giving Maxi. I just ordered a bunch of food selected from the list here https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1E_HZnTcJdsr20Gpivo2ID1KQ9wlZAe1Xy3LDTDVRofU/edit#gid=0 from Tanya's kidney disease site. Per recommendations, I chose the ones with the lowest protein + lowest carbs: Weruva chicken fricasee, paw lickin' chicken, on the cat wok, steak frites, glam n punk, Fromm salmon & tuna, chicken & duck, chicken & salmon. Do you think these foods are wrong for Maxi? On these foods, will he get muscle wastage?

The Weruva foods are mostly fine for diabetics. Some exceptions, Grandma's Chicken Soup is too high carbs, but low in phosphorus. It's a good one to keep around for high carb food, as are the Cats in the Kitchen pouches.

You don't want to feed low protein at this point. You want low phosphorus and high quality protein. From Tanya's website: What Food to Feed
 
I'm still not seeing the SDMA on the labs that are on your spreadsheet. What is the line#?

I got the same information that Wendy outlined from my vet -- high protein, low phos.

The SDMA is on the copies of the lab results attached above and also cited by Bron above. I didn't add it to my spreadsheet because there wasn't a space for it. Someone made the spreadsheet for me and I assumed that all the levels I should enter, the levels that interested this group, were in the spreadsheet the way she set it up. I've just added it: line 42.

Maybe someone could provide the names of appropriate food for cats with diabetes + early kidney disease?

And could someone confirm based on Maxi's lab results that there is no evidence of kidney disease?

You can add additional lab values. There are occasions when other tests are done and there isn’t an entry on the lab tab for the test. Just add it yourself.
