overweight (20#, down from 24# 1 year ago), NOT a mellow, cuddly guy, vet visit for weight loss, pu/pd...elevated bg in office (VERY stressed), given script for 2units lantus BID, return for labs in one month...wha'? thank you people for this website, i found it, have been reading non-stop and have armed myself with some supplies, and what feels like a good start on some pretty overwhelming info. going to try to take a few days to transition from (bad!) dry kibble to fancy feast low carb wet options, working on glucose testing on recalcitrant cat with human meter (263 first one), testing for ketones...have a lantus pen at cvs ready to be picked up...going to start with either 0.5 or 1 unit next week, would like to have food transitioned and fructosamine test back before i start...as long as no ketones....i'm pretty sure i'll be hitting you up for info on this worrisome journey, thank you in advance.

Cory, you are awesome. You are in here, reading all the things and learning tons of good information to help Badger. It's a great plan to transition the food before you start, as long as Badger is doing okay. It's great you are testing already, so you can get a good idea of how the food change is effecting Badger's BGL before you start insulin. Your plan to start at .5 or 1 unit of insulin twice a day is sound.

In short, you are awesome and Badger is in good hands. Set up a spreadsheet, and your signature when you can. This will help members help you when you have questions or need dosing advice. You can find out what you need here: New? How You Can Help Us Help You!

Welcome Cory and Badger
Well done getting up to speed so quickly.
Swapping over to a low carb diet before starting the insulin is a good idea as long as you are testing for ketones.

Have a read through the 2 dosing methods if you have a chance over on the Lantus forum and see which one suits better.
You have a great insulin, Lantus, and I’m glad to see you are using a human meter as our dosing methods are based on the human meter readings.

Getting the spreadsheet up and running and entering your data will be a great help. Well done testing already!!

Have you found some if the testing tips?
These are 2 of my favorites.

Testing
We all know the basics:
  • Warm the ear with a rice sock or a warm washcloth wrapped in a plastic bag.
  • Either freehand or use a lancing device; new members usually start with a larger gauge lancet such as 28g or 29g until the ear learns to bleed; then progress to a 31g or 33g which are finer.
  • Be sure to poke in the "sweet spot" and not the major vein that runs along the length of the ear. Poking the vein will not only hurt, but will result in a lot of blood. The sweet spot is on the edge of the ear.

But did you also know there is a particular way for the lancet to be used? It has one side that is bevelled so the sharpest part goes in first, if used correctly. In the photo below, you can see the lancet is angled.
