Good morning from Ozzie!
Ozzie and I recently celebrated 11 years together❤️ I adopted him as a stray from BCSPCA. His current estimated age is 14. Ozzie was first diagnosed with Diabetes in January 2024. The vet had prescribed Prozinc, but the dosage was too high and dealing with it was it was a nightmare! With the help of Facebook group I was able to get him into remission which lasted about 11 months. With the 2nd relapse, a different veterinary clinic, and Lantus I was able to get him into remission within a couple weeks. This past January, Ozzie has had his 3rd relapse. This time his gluc readings remain mostly high regardless of increasing Lantus doses. He’s currently taking 6 units twice daily and he is eating Tiki Cat chicken. Ozzie has a vet appointment Tuesday March 23. He will be tested for IGF-1 and IAA. We are happy to be here for ongoing support and information. Have a great day!

I'm still fairly new to feline diabetes but from the calculator I found on one of the message boards, Tiki Cat is still too high in carbs. Maybe try Fancy Feast Classic Pate or Friskies Pate. I know that made all the difference with my cat.

Hello to Ozzie and his beautiful eyes, sorry to hear he's back with high numbers, some cats will be a life time diabetic like my Corky, some go on remission for a bit, then back to insulin, it can be many factors, change in diet, an illness like UTI, an infected tooth, cats are good hiding illnesses and when they are diabetic like ours, it shows in their glucose levels. he food you are feeding if is dry is high in carbs, most dry or "prescribed" dry food are approximately between 20-30% carbs, cats cannot digest carbs diabetic cats need to have a diet of wet can or raw foods between 0-10% carbs, most members use Fancy Feast pates or Friskies pate most feed up to 5%, also Ozzie needs to eat several meals or snacks during the day Lantus is a Depot insulin, this will keep the insulin in check throughout the day if, when you change food the transition has to be a slow one not to upset Ozzie's stomach also you will need to test more often since the low carb change can dive the glucose level.
Cats are very sensitive to stress, so when he's at the vet the glucose level test will not be accurate, higher, it can cause an unnecessary increase in dose. I will tag a member that can give advice on Lantus and dosing,

Is the Tiki Cat dry or canned? Some of the canned is low carb enough for diabetics.

Have the vet do regular bloodwork as well and check the teeth. Infections and poor dental health can mean high blood glucose levels.

Thanks for your reply. Ozzie gets pate only. He has had dental cleaning just before his first diabetes diagnosis 2 years ago. Vet checked his teeth recently and he indeed needs it again. However, of course we want to get his blood glucose under control first. Vet has done routine bloodwork and urinalysis already and everything came back in normal ranges except for glucose. Hopefully we can figure out what’s going on. Nice to meet you!
 
Hello and belated welcome from another member from BC, though I’m currently not on much as I’m out of country. Post when you get the IGF-1 and IAA results back and when I’m back I’ll pop in and see what I can suggest.

We’d love to see your blood sugar test data. Especially in a spreadsheet, details on how to do that in number 3 above. This data drives what we suggest.
