Hello I am Christine, my sugar baby is Wyatt, an almost 14yo male, I also have 3 other female cats. Wyatt was just diagnosed last Thursday. It was overwhelming but my husband and I are navigating through it the best we can! :cat:My cats were fed morning and night with both dry and wet food, and dry was available essentially 24/7. I have been picking that up now, and transitioning them all away from the dry. I got some Fancy Feast Classics and they all seem to enjoy it! I want to get some treats that are good for our boy too. Any recommendations?
:cat:My vet said no food in between for Wyatt but he has been ravenous a few times so we fed him! I was afraid of hypo. It seemed to work.
:cat:The vet prescribed Vetsulin but I am reading that is not the best for cats. We follow up with the vet on the 3rd, and I will ask for an Rx for Lantus.
:cat:We also want to start home testing. Is there a chart someplace for numbers (high/low, when to feed based on them, etc.) Is there a tester that does the lancing and testing all in one?

Excellent job getting them off the dry. Purebites freeze dried chicken is a favorite for my cat.

You can feed anytime, just no food 2 hours prior to the preshot test so the number is not food influenced. I feed four times a day. Morning, lunch, dinner, before bed

Some do good on vetsulin (mine did good on it in the beginning) but many do better on lantus or ProZinc, so it's not a bad idea to switch.

I get the purebites for dogs because it's a bigger bag, so it's cheaper per ounce. THe pieces are a little bigger so I just break them up smaller. THe cat bags and dog bags are otherwise exactly the same. THe only ingredient in it is freeze dried chicken. You might want to try the cat size one just to see if he likes it first so you don't waste money.

Is there a chart for numbers, if they are good or bad then how you adjust food and insulin accordingly?

Normal range on a human meter is 50-120 and on a pet meter it's 68-150. We would expect a newly diagnosed cat to be above that esp in the beginning. Eventually working down to spend as much time as possible in the normal range. What you want to be careful of is to not go BELOW the bottom number. That is called hypoglycemia and can be deadly... This is why you want to have some high carb food and syrup on hand just in case.

So you start with a low dose like 1 unit and track the numbers. If they are staying too high we will suggest you raise by 0.25-0.5 units at a time. You raise in small increments so you don't pass a good dose. There's no chart that says like if it's 300 you give X amount, and that's because every cat is different. For one cat a unit might make them drop 200 points and for another cat it has almost no effect at all. You have to see how your cat reacts. Make sense?
