Hello, my cat, recently diagnosed with diabetes, does not like a med due to bitterness. Has anyone found anything to make it less bitter?

What specific med and form (pill?, liquid?)? I put some meds in a #3 or #4 gelcap and use a pill popper to give the med.

Thank you. I did see that post and wrote it down. I am using Metformin liquid. I also read to try Bob’s flake yeast. I will try that tonight. It is not baking or cooking yeast. I will let u know how that works. (Abby needs dental work but BG must be under control first and I don’t want to grab her jaw). Thank you Again.

We actually don't recommend using any of the oral diabetes medications in cats. The way they work is to try to force the pancreas to make more insulin. Cat's have the unique ability for their pancreas to heal and resume working again, but to do that healing, it needs rest, not more work.

The oral meds can look like they're working for a short time, but in almost all cases, the cat will end up needing insulin anyway but by forcing the pancreas to do that extra work, the beta cells needed to produce insulin have been burned out so any chance of achieving remission is lost.

Is there a specific reason you're using the oral meds instead of insulin or was it just what your vet recommended?

Skip the oral meds. Ask for ProZinc or y insulin.

Abby needs dental work

When you're ready to get the dental done, it's wise to get x-rays done before and after to make sure that there are no tooth fragments left behind that might cause infection or inflammation, both of which can cause elevation of BG levels. (Diabetics are more vulnerable to infections.)
