I just received my Lantus Solostar Pen and have a few questions . The instructions about the pen itself I can comprehend with no problem (I hope!)
I have read several instruction videos and just need to clarify a few things. One said to try and inject the injection after a full meal and another said to leave the needle in the cat for a full ten seconds before pulling out. Other demonstration videos don't mention this at all. My cat is the definition of a scaredy cat so I am not anticipating and easy time of it. Luckily I have a friend who can hold the cat so that helps. I was hoping I could inject the cat and pull out the needle fairly quickly and not have to stay in for ten seconds.
Any help and tips will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Steve

WELCOME TO FDMB Steve! Glad you found us! Theres a wealth of information here with good folks to help you decipher it all.
As to your question...10 seconds? Ive never heard of such instructions. Then again Ive never used a "Pen" Dont worry there are PLENTY here who do. ;) Are you planning on home testing before each injection? It is the ONLY way to make sure your kitty is safe to receive that injection.
Again welcome to the best site on this planet to help you help your diabetic kitty.
While you are waiting for more replies try reading the yellow stickies at the top of the Lantus forum Lots of GOOD INFO HERE:

Are you using the pen needle or syringes? If you use the pen needle, I believe you are supposed to inject for a full 10 seconds. But if you are using syringes which is what we recommend here, it’s not necessary, maybe just a second or two

We don't use the special pen needles here. We use regular insulin syringes and pull the insulin out of the pen for several reasons, one of which is because if you DO use the pen syringes, you have to hold it for 10 seconds. With regular insulin syringes, you shoot and it's over.

Also, you're supposed to "prime" the pen which means wasting 2 units each time you shoot. At the price of Lantus, wasting 4 units per day is crazy!

If you get regular insulin syringes, you just pull the cap off the pen and insert the syringe into the rubber stopper. Don't push air into the pen, just pull the dose you want out. You want to get 3/10ml, 30 or 31 gauge insulin syringes with half unit marks.

All these syringes have half unit markings (very important when you're doing microdosing) and are the correct syringes for U100 insulin and are available from ADW online:
UtiCare
Monoject
Carepoint
Sure Comfort
B/D

They're also available at WalMart if you have one near you. Their Relion brand 3/10ml, 30 or 31 gauge, 6mm or 8mm insulin syringes all come with half unit markings and are only $12.58 for a box of 100 (although a lot of them don't realize they DO come with half unit markings!)
