Hi...

My daughter and I have been doing our best to help feral and stray cats for years. We have 4 rescues of our own. One of them is obese and obviously now diabetic. I was shocked to read how high dry cat food is in carbohydrates!!! I have very little money, as most people these days, so any information to help will be highly appreciated! I just stopped all dry food and switched from Friskies can to Fancy Feast wet foods. I feel so bad for this sweetie. :( Her name is Slushy and she is about 7-8 years old.

Thank you so very much!!!

Welcome! Are you home testing? Is your cat on insulin? How many units?

You can feed 9 Lives or Friskies pretty inexpensively. You want to look for classic pate style food, no gravy style foods. If you can convert all your cats to wet food, it's easier to monitor food intake.

Take a deep breath. It's scary & super overhwhelming. I've been at this 1 year and I still get overwhelmed.

Welcome to FDMB!

You've found a great place to learn and get help for Slushy.

Home testing Slushy's blood glucose level will help you keep Slushy safe first and foremost, but also because you'll be able to monitor her and run curves at home it will help with the costs of her treatment. Are you testing already? If not, then we can help you to learn how. If you let us know where you are geographically we will be able to recommend meters that are available in your part of the world.

Friskies pates, except Mixed Grill, are below 10% calories from carbohydrates and come in 13 oz cans, which makes feeding multitudes a bit easier. I feed the 14 in my home Friskies pates.

Hi, Welcome to FDMB!

You have come to the right place for help.

I stumbled across this forum almost 2 months ago as I was doing research on feline diabetes so I could learn about the disease. We took over care of my grandkitty, Hank, from my son. My son tried for a month but it was too overwhelming with work, being single, 2 other cats and 2 dogs.

You have done the best step first by switching to all wet food.

If you haven't started insulin yet, try home testing his BG for a week to see how his numbers are, if he's healthy otherwise. Have you tried home testing yet? I recommend watching some Youtube videos on, testing blood glucose on a cat. The videos are very good. I must worn you, the videos make it look so easy. It's not that it's hard just tricky.

Did your vet tell you that cats have the capability to go into remission? Sometimes with just a food change or the addition of a good insulin such as Lantus, Levmir, PZI or ProZinc. That is my goal for Hank, remission.

Anyway, welcome and if you have any questions, just ask away.

Kimmie
