I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the correct place. My cat Daisy was just diagnosed with diabetes, and I just found this wonderful site. Feeling rather nervous/fearful... Vet will teach me the techniques, but still...I'm rather klutzy and not real confident about doing things like this. Thank you for being here. I will start reading now.

This is the perfect place! Be sure to read the threads on this page from new users and the Health and Nutrition threads on the main index page. Ask any questions you have and let us know how we can help. Everyone who answers your post is paying it forward for help they received when they were new and overwhelmed.

We strongly encourage home blood glucose monitoring to keep your cat safe. An inexpensive human glucometer and pet specific reference numbers will help you and your vet make decisions about your cat's care. Many of us use the WalMart ReliOn Confirm or Confirm Micro, or the Prime. If you abhor WalMart, pop over to American Diabetes Wholesale via our shopping link above and get the Arkray USA Glucocard01 or 01 Min which are generic versions of the Confirm.

Low carb food such as Friskies pates or Fancy Feast Classic Pates may drop the glucose level 100 mg/dL and drop the insulin needs as much as 2 units. If you aren't using insulin yet, making the food change now will be less difficult. Cat Info has a printable food list of most US brands and the % of calories from each of protein, fat, and carbohydrate; select foods with less than 10% calories from carbohydrates.

Hello Teresa and extra sweet kitty Daisy and welcome to the message board.

See you already got some suggestions about diet and home testing.

The third leg for good treatment of diabetes in cats is linked to a good, long lasting insulin like Prozinc, Levimir or Lantus. The other insulins although cheaper, rarely last more than 6-8 hours in a cat.

Hello Teresa!

I was a basket case when my Jynxy was diagnosed a couple of months ago. Now all of us (myself, my husband, and Jynxy) have settled down into a routine. Jynxy isn't happy about the routine, but he is getting better at it. I have not yet tested his blood sugars because the insulin injections were going so badly. But now, I feel more confident at giving the shots and I have someone to demonstrate the blood sugar testing so I will attempt that next. He is learning to like the pate foods and all the cats eat the higher protein kibble so all is well right now.

You are in the best place, so many people who are eager to help and support here. They all know what it is like to be newly diagnosed. I wish you and Daisy well and I don't have other advice except keep on going!!!
