Hello. My 13 year old Katie was diagnosed today. I'm feeling very overwhelmed and reading the newbie FAQ has me even more overwhelmed. She is on Vetulin/ 1 unit twice a day. After reading the FAQ , the vet didn't say anything about testing blood or urine so now I'm concerned. I gave her her first shot tonight and she did great, but I was a wreck. I'm glad I found this site with not only support but a wealth of information.

Welcome, fdmb is a wealth of great information and caring people. My Hidey wouldn't be doing as good as he is if it wasn't for all these wonderful people. It is overwhelming at first, but it gets easier. Home testing is pretty easy once you get the hang of it. You can use a human and there's a bunch of YouTube videos that you can watch on it as well. What type of food are you feeding?

Welcome to Katie and her bean! Can we get your name too?

It is rather overwhelming at first. It's a steep learning curve but it becomes normal quickly. We recommend home testing to keep your kitty safe. You wouldn't give insulin to your child without testing...it's the same for your cat. Human glucometers are fine like already mentioned. Lots of people use relion from Walmart...cheap strips.

We also recommend a wet, low carb diet. Under 10% is best. There are cheap options like fancy feast classics and friskies classic pates.

Please ask all the questions you want. We are here to help!

Welcome to FDMB.

Since you are already giving insulin, wait to do any additional food changes until you are blood glucose testing, for safety. Changing from a higher carb to a low carb diet may drop the glucose 100 mg/dL and reduce insulin needs.

Welcome Katie and Katie's mom. I am new to all of this too and I know just what you mean...very overwhelming. However, you have come to the right place. There is plenty of information and links on this website to help you and Katie. Most importantly, there are some really knowledgeable people who will help answer all your questions. You will notice that many members have a link to their kitty's spreadsheet on their signature line. Once you start testing, you will want to start Katie's spreadsheet so people can review her numbers with you. I also found it very educational for me to review other's spreadsheets. Anyway, take time to review all the information here and just take small bits of it at a time. It will get easier with time.

Welcome sugar princess Katie and your caregiver. You first name is?????

My very best advice for you? Breathe, just breathe. Deep breath in, hold, release, deep breath in, hold, release, deep breath in, hold, release.

We are here to help you all along the way in this new journey you have started with your kitty Katie. We call it the sugardance.

Be assured that we want to help you keep your Katie safe.

How are you doing today? Any questions we can answer for you?

Thank-you all for your warm welcome! Katie seems to be doing okay although she now runs when she sees me coming. Can't say as I blame her for that! My name is Alice and I live in SC.

Why is she running? If you shoot while she is eating she shouldn't notice it, or if you give a treat after testung, she may come to enjoy it!

Katie sweetie, you need to run towards your mommabean Alice! Maybe she needs to shake that treat bag harder! :o  :o
