Hi. My 11yo Maine Coon was diagnosed three weeks ago. So far we're doing okay. We're struggling with home glucose testing and tonight he vomited up his dinner. So, tonight I'm anxious about his health.

Hi,

Can you share some more information? What kind of insulin and what dose? Has his diet changed lately- could his vomiting be due to a different food? A hairball?

Tell us more about the hometesting? What is the hard part - getting his cooperation or getting a drop of blood?

2 units of Lantus.

We've been giving high protein dry in the morning and high protein soft mixed with raw in the evening. Tonight I did mix with venison which was different as the store was out of rabbit. Thorns doesn't like chicken... so maybe venison was too rich? He is asking for more food but I felt like I should get a glucose on him first.

No Hairball. It was all dinner. I wish it had been hair. Gah! Cleaning up soft food mixed with raw is revolting.

Glucose is difficult because he won't sit still well and buy the time I get a good blood drop the strip times out. It's like a Stooges episode. And now I've blundered it badly enough that he runs when he sees the supplies.

I taught my cat to be home tested by soending time in our testing place...a towel on the kitchen floor...and just petting her ears then giving a freeze dried chicken treat. She doesn't love it but she comes running because she knows the treat comes after. Always testing in the same place helps I think. Try adjusting her to the idea of touching ears and getting treats. See if it helps.
