Not sure if I should tag in this but

I ran into an issue tonight giving him his shot. He didn't want to come out from under the bed and growled and hissed at me. Eventually he peaked out for some treats and I was able to grab him but now he is pissed at my fiancee and I. Is there also a limit to how many treats to give him in a day I've been trying to only give him one per shot and test. I give him the feline greenies smart bites for hairballs. I also have catnip flavored temptations treats.

Fridge just makes it last longer

I would say he should eat at least a tablespoon.

Upset about testing is normal, it takes a week or two to find a groove. Just keep up with the treats, make test and shot time happy/fun. Sing while you're doing it to ease your own stress.

It will take you months to use up that vial. It's 400 units, at 1U BID that's 200 days. I don't see him safely going above 1.5-2U BID. Your call, but without being home to keep an eye and with it being such a harsh insulin, I fear you'll find it wasted time.

Has anyone mentioned the freeze dried treats? That's what pretty much all of us use. Those you can give as many as you want. You're essentially shooting yourself in the foot with temptations/high carb treats, but I understand it takes time to get/afford everything for diabetes.

The novolin says it lasts 43 days so thats what I was going go base it off of. And I think he eats about that much or half before the shot so I don't think I need to worry as much with that.

I got him the freeze dried treats and he doesn't like them unless I'm doing something wrong with them.i do try to give him just 1 every time but that adds up to 6 treats and if I have to tempt him from under the bed. Do you just give them to ur cat? I also tried putting them in water to rehydrate them and he still turn them down. Maybe if I heated them up in the microwave after rehydrating them.....I might try to run to the pet store again tomorrow and see if they have other flavors usually he likes chicken(he goes nuts when I have KFC chicken) I've been trying to get everything that is suggested. We do have the money right now since we're saving to try and buy a house he's just taking out of that

Edit: I did talk to a vet that said the human meters for pets give more of a range then the actual number?

Also if I can't get him from his hiding space is it better to skip and not stress him out? It took a lot to get him from under our bed and he was not happy

I am going to ask @Diane Tyler's Mom if she has any ideas about low carb treats that you can give him to tempt him out from under the bed.
Try and keep the SS up to date so we can see if you can please.
You are doing a good job trying to get things sorted out. It takes time in the beginning, especially if you have a kitty who is not cooperating.
If KFC works for him, I would buy some and cut it up into bit sized pieces and freeze them and bring them out for testing and injections and getting him out from under the bed. Try and get the chicken that doesn’t have breadcrumbs.

I would stick with the human meter…It is just as good as the pet meter and is much cheaper to buy the test strips.

I would also swap over to a better insulin sooner rather than later. It will be much better for Jacob and easier for you as far as food goes. And the more gentle insulins don’t have the hard and fast drops that Novolin and vetsulin have.

Ok I will try that with the chicken. Do you have any idea why my spreadsheet keeps changing to view only mode? I do this on my android phone and I think closing the app and reopening it has worked so far. I'm also keeping track of when I see him eat.

And with using the human tester is it safer to make sure he doesn't go under 100? I'm wondering if once I can change food and maybe lower his stress if that will help. My mom thinks this can be all due to stress but I think he has been drinking and peeing a lot for a while and I just didn't put two and two together.

I will talk to the vet Tuesday about changing his insulin I know it's important I just hate to waste $150 but his health is more important.

It's a glitch with the Sheets app unfortunately, I have same problem and it drives me nuts sometimes. Sometimes.i have to go in, edit the settings, let it take effect, change it back, close and reopen. A pain.

No, I don't think it's just due to stress. As for the cutoff number, all our guidelines were written with human meters in mind. But it's really whatever number you're comfortable with.

Ok thats good to know and I have also been doing that and wondered if I did something wrong lol

I know it's going to take some time till I figure out all the numbers so for right now I'll aim to get and keep in him the 100 range? That's not too low and not too high.

Correct - lowest number of the cycle around 100. Unfortunately you don't have much control over the preshot numbers, those are what they are for the time being.
