Intro post for Merlin

So I just started home testing and the vet has Merlin on 3 units of Prozinc. His tests number for last night was in the 300s, think 398 and this morning it was in the low 400s, maybe 409. I'm using a RightTest monitor I got from Publix last year and the strips I've got are supposedly expired so I don't know how accurate it is. I plan to get fresh strips soon. But I don't know what the numbers mean or what I'm looking for. I know some of the dosing says stuff about not giving injections at lower numbers like 150 and below and my vet had said with his last fructosamine test that 200 was in the normal range. So I'm not really sure what's good or bad and what I'm aiming for. I also got a copy of the spreadsheet to track his numbers but I'm not sure what any of the sections are for.

We're still transitioning food trying to find a good low carb wet food he likes and getting a schedule down, just started trying the small low carb snack every 2 hours between meals.

When were those tests taken? Before the shot was given? Or how many hours after the shot was given?

I would like to see a test four hours after the shot is given (+4 on the spreadsheet) and on a different day a test six hours after the shot is given (+6 on the spreadsheet).

The spreadsheet is simple. When you test in the morning before the shot is given you put that number into the AMPS Cell. AMPS means a.m. preshot (morning preshot BG). When you test in the evening before the shot is given you put that number into the PMPS (p.m. preshot) cell.

The hours past shot time are all listed in the columns +1, +2, +3, etc. for the number of hours past the shot time that the BG test was taken. It would not do any good at all to use clock time on the spreadsheet since we are all on different time zones. What is more useful is to know the blood glucose value how many hours after the shot was given.

Ah I think I get it, thanks.

They were both done right before their dinner and breakfast meal times so about 12hrs after his last shot.

Good. Test first, then feed and give the insulin. I used to give my cat his shot while he was eating he was busy munching away and didn’t care a bit.

Okay finally got the Spreadsheet setup but I haven't had a chance to really do the extended testing, gonna try to do that today and tomorrow.

So far his numbers just seem to stay in the low 400s or high/mid 300s and I'm not sure why or how to help that. The vet has him at 3u for the ProZinc but it still doesn't seem to be bringing the numbers down much. I've been slowly trying to get him eating more of the less carby wet foods he likes and doing a few small low carb snacks throughout the day, but he does still have access to dry food as the dispenser drops a few small portions for the other 3 overnight, largely so they can finish it off and we can be done with it. Though I've a camera on their food and haven't really seen him bother with the dry food.
