What do all of you think/or have experienced with Prozinc vs. Lantus? Pros v cons? I know all cats react differently, but knowing as many different experiences as we can helps us to make the most informed decision we can for our own little love.

It looks to be more affordable, and for pets specifically (when I keep hearing sometimes human insulin is rough on kitties). Any experiences/thoughts? Things I should be aware of?
Thanks so much!

Ps: Our cat hasn't started insulin, we're awaiting more test results, so we have a time to choose the best we can ahead of time without worrying about switching!

It might depend on your schedule. proZinc does tend to be more flexible in terms of shooting and varying the dose. lantus and Levemir have a protocol that may be easier to follow - if you cat does this, do this. ProZinc is dosed based on your particular cat so it can be harder to figure out the dosing, at least at first. There are published studies for Lantus with remission rates. Cats certainly can and do go into remission with ProZinc but there are no published studies. More people on this forum use Lantus and Levemir than use ProZinc.

But it does boil down to "the best insulin is the one that works best for your cat". And you don't know that until you start using it.

Happy to see you over here Erin!! The Facebook group is a great start for beginner stuff, but here's where the real miracles happen!!

As I said on Facebook, ProZinc is also a U40 insulin where Lantus and Levemir are U100 insulins....that just means that a U40 insulin has 40 units of insulin per mL where a U100 has 100 units per mL, so cost of the two is comparable

All thanks to you, Chris! I think I may switch this thread to Novolin and Lantus, which I a! Just now hearing about...based on the info I've since learned about ProZinc. Thoughts?

Well, I'm a big advocate for Lantus because it has a proven protocol and has worked very well with China

If you get a script for Lantus, let us know so we can help teach you the protocol that will give him the best chance at remission...the TR protocol. I understand you work full time during the week? Well at the top of the Lantus Forum is a sticking titled "IS TIGHT REGULATION POSSIBLE WITH A FULL TIME JOB? YES!"

Where do you live Erin? We may be able to find someone close enough to you to come show you how to test and how to measure your insulin and just generally get your questions asked.

My personal experience is shown on my spreadsheet- there is a prozinc tab and a lantus tab. We were on prozinc for about 8 months and couldn't get it to work much for Rudy, and now he is in the process of being controlled after 2 months on lantus. I can answer any specific questions on the differences (only based on my own experience) if you have any. Welcome :-)

Welcome to the white kitty club ! Welcome to FDMB! The people here are smarter than my ex-vet.bas you can see by my sight, Fred was on Lantus for 4 months and is now in remission! I give so much credit to the sugar moms and dads here, that helped me learn to do the blood testing and insulin shots and during those times when he dropped super low, they told me to breathe and walked me through it. I recommend that you get a spreadsheet set up, I'm sure someone will give you the instructions and also set up a signature with yours and your kitty's info. You're in the right place! And if you do Lantus, join the Lantus forum. Have a blessed day!

While you wait, now is the time to start switching over to low carb, canned or raw, over the counter cat food. Check out Cat Info and this food list. Pick anything with less than 10% calories from carbohydrates (not weight), such as Fancy Feast Classic pates.

Mitz has been on ProZinc for over a year and it's working well for her. It would probably have worked even better if I had started testing at home sooner. But having only ever used ProZinc, I can't offer any thoughts on how it compares to other insulins. Based on all the reading I've done on this site, Lantus, ProZinc and Levemir are all good ones.
best,
Joan

Mitz is gorgeous !

Novolin should not even be a consideration unless it is the only insulin you can possibly afford. It is harsh, short acting, and not a good choice for cats. It is likely one of the human insulin you have heard is rough on cats - the short acting ones.
Lantus is a long lasting insulin and is gentle on cats. Very low hypo rate when use correctly and pretty high remission rate in studies in newly diagnosed cats.
Prozinc is one of the best animal insulin. Gentle, longer lasting. More forgiving in schedule that Lantus and Lev are.

My personal preference is Lantus. With its high remission rates in newly diagnosed cats, that is what I wants cats on when I work with them.

CJ was on Novolin and went hypo. It is, as Melanie and Smokey says, very harsh on cats and not long lasting. CJ was one of the lucky few to go into remission after a hypo episode on Novolin but if she were to need insulin again, I would use Lantus or ProZinc.
